Law of the Game on Joystiq: EA + Take-Two =/= Monopoly

In this week's Law of the Game on Joystiq, I take the surprisingly unpopular opinion that an EA merger with Take-Two isn't going to have any practical monopolistic effect in the market.

Avid X from 360style.net is in COD4.

Avid and I were recently playing a one on one game of COD4 when he mentioned that he saw a reflection of his actual self in a computer monitor in the new China Town Map. I thought he was just trying to get a knife kill on me, but when I looked at what he was looking at it was true. Check the video out!

Remember that Clear Spartan you pre-ordered? Pre-order it again!

Back in December 2007, Spawn.com had offered a Active Camouflage Spartan for pre-order and the only thing you had to do was log on to the site and put in your email/address information to get on the list to pre-order it. After months and months went by I was starting to wonder when the thing would actually be up for pre-order. Then when McFarlane Toys put out word that a CQB Spartan would be getting released at the SD Comic Con; my worry increased even more! The good news is that the EVA AC Spartan is still coming out, just not any time in the near future, see the email I received below from Spawn.com

Thank you for your registration for the Halo EVA Active Camouflage exclusive by McFarlane Toys.

This email confirms we receive your original registration back in December 2007 for the Halo Active Camouflage Spartan Exclusive at the Spawn Store (http://store.spawn.com).   Unfortunately, the figure has been delayed and will be released November 2008.

We are in the process of creating a brand new pre-order site to make things even easier for our customers.  Previously when you registered, you entered your name and email address but there was no guarantee of how many you could buy or that the figure would be available when you return.  We have now updated the system to let you pick the exact number you wish to buy and eliminates any concerns of any customer loosing out on the exclusive as you would be guaranteed the amount you enter for your order!*

This is the true benefit of a pre order!

This change to our pre order site will require you to register again for the Halo exclusive but this time choosing the quantity you would like to buy.  We will have additional information on www.spawn.com regarding the release of the new pre-order site and the exact dates to place an order.

We appreciate your patience and understanding to the delay and we hope you enjoy the new pre-order site for our upcoming  releases.  Be on the lookout for more preorder opportunities in 2008 and thank you for choosing McFarlane Toys.

Sincerely,

Exclusive Preorders

* Ordering limits still apply for some exclusives.

Gee, maybe by the time this figure is out, I'll be able to use my Halo Points from the figures for something.....thanks Todd!

'HALO 3' COMIC-CON EXCLUSIVE FIGURE ANNOUNCEMENT

other_hellspartan_photo_02_dp  other_cqb-clear_photo_02_dp

I hate the San Diego Comic Con. Not because I dislike conventions or comics, but because I never have the money to go to the one in San Diego and I can never ever get the exclusives without paying far out my butt for them on eBay!

I have been lucky, I did get the very limited Active Camo Halo 2 Spartan as well as the limited ODST trooper, but now I'll have to find someone who can hook me up with these upcoming Halo 3 Comic Con exclusives.

Honestly, I think the Hell Spartan look ugly, ugly as ummm....hell; but I dig that clear Spartan! If memory serves me right this is one of the exclusives that you can also get on the Spawn.com web site, hopefully they didn't change that promotion.

"McFarlane Toys will have two exclusive Halo 3 figures at this year's Comic-Con International, July 24-27 at the San Diego Convention Center.

A special edition Spartan Soldier EVA "HellSpartan" will be sold together with an exclusive clear CQB Spartan. Although not packaged together, the two figures will be sold as a set, and cannot be purchased separately.

Details on where/when/how to purchase these exclusive figures will post here on SPAWN.com as soon as it is available.

Halo Uprising issue #3 delayed again!

The much delayed Halo Uprising series has been delayed yet again.

The new date? May 7, 2008.

Old Vs. New

A lot of friends of mine have asked me, "Should I get the wireless headset? Is it worth the $50?" I'm here to tell you all, just stick with the wired. I'll explain why (the following post isn't true about all wirless headsets but only a personal thought on which in my opinion is better).

Let me keep this brief and simple:

Wireless

+ Very compact and convenient with no need to carry controller around in order to talk

+ If controller batteries die out, no need to worry, you can still talk since the headset isn't connected to the controller

- Like all wireless things, it needs charging.

- Headset will randomly switch off and on when playing.

- Mine broke. Why? Not sure; didn't do a thing to it.

Wired

+ No need for charging.

+ Very reliable and won't shut off randomly.

+ Much cheaper (around $20 cheaper than the wired headset)

I have no negatives for the wired headset. I suppose you could be picky and just say, "Well, you need to carry your controller with you in order to talk". But honestly, is that really a big deal?

Go with the wired.

Final Gears of War action figures revealed!

N.E.C.A. Toys have revealed the final production units of the brand new Gears of War action figures, along with the final packaging for the toys as well. These figures are scheduled to be released in April, but don't hold your breath just yet. N.E.C.A. is known for its delays on toys and Gears could be the latest victim. If that is the case then we could very well see these things early May. The Xbox Collector will run a video review of them when they come out, just like how we covered the Halo 3 figures.

And yes, the Halo Comic Xbox Collector video is still coming, we've just run into some delays due to unforeseen circumstances. Its still coming!

Happy Birthday, Law of the Game

Ver más ,

While this is a few days late, Law of the Game has officially been online for a full year. Looking back, it's been really quite amazing how much has happened in the first 12 months, from the numerous major blogs linking articles to the ABA Top 100 Blawg award to the column on Joystiq.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of the readers out there for reading and supporting Law of the Game.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to note that I will be on Late Nite JengaJam this Thursday, April 10, with the opportunity for anyone to call in and chat for part of the show. The podcast should be available shortly after the show for anyone who wants to listen.

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack

April 15th, the launch date for the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack is a collection of three new amazing maps:

1- Avalanche :
Your excuse to ride the many vehicles made famous by the Halo series, but retuned for the snowy battlefield.

This map is actually a tribute to the “Sidewinder” map from Halo: Combat Evolved, but has been massively revamped for Xbox 360.

2- Blackout :
It is actually the same basic design as Lockout (the fan favourite from Halo2), but you won’t believe the graphical overhaul it has received.

Sometimes we’re forgetting how much Xbox 360 really has moved things on graphically, but classic gameplay lives forever.

3- Ghost Town :
This medium-size map suits Team Slayer games, so expect to be kept very busy indeed.

Don’t be surprised to find your pulse racing as you navigate the rabbit warren of passages or emerge onto the rooftops with the ground far below.

Only for 800 Microsoft points you can enjoy more your multiplayer games with the new Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack......

Slowly coming back!

I'm in the midst of reinstalling everything on my studio PC as its been it least 4 years since I've put a fresh copy of XP on. Any messages you've sent me will be answered in the next few days!

Water Cooled Xbox 360

"From reader Michael Hurt comes this: a watercooled Xbox 360. As casemods go, this one looks like someone locked the A-Team in a barn, Murdoch and B.A. improvised with some aquarium tank hose and an aerator, and the gang saved the day. I love it when a plan comes together.

My first instinct was to call b.s., on this, but then I don't know what the hell I am talking about, either in the realm of casemods or electrical engineering. And, clearly, there are holes in the top of the console where he's routed the cooling tubes. So it looks like he gave his 360 a cochlear implant. (Seriously, you ever seen an old geezer with one of those? Looks like Lobot from Star Wars.)

The guy who made this also laid a better heatsink on the power supply. Check the link for pics of that, and more. Now I'm wondering if I can get his phone number."

Wow, if this is true then major props to the creator. If it didnt look ridiculous then I would say Microsoft should use this design.

How to find Halo 3 figures at Wal-Mart.

I only live about an hour away from Chicago, so you would think that when new items are suppose to arrive at store shelves we get them fairly quickly. Not so where I live, some times items are delayed for days, weeks and even months and I'm often forced to order things online if I want to get them in a decent amount of time. The same thing happened when it came time for the Halo 3 figures to be released, and knowing the amount of delays for items here I ordered them online right away and got them in a timely manner. Now the Halo 3 toys can be found easily in Gamestop, Hot Topic's and FYE's but when it comes to Wal-Mart; many people can't find them. After searching at about ten different Wal-Marts for some Blue exclusive Spartans and turning up empty, I decided to check the net to see if there was a reason for this.

HALO-001

As it turns out, tons of people have been running into the same issue and are having no luck finding these at Wal-Mart! As it turns out, only certain Wal-Mart stores carry the McFarlane toys line and this is the main reason that you've probably had no luck finding any of these Halo 3 figures at your local Wal-Mart store! After doing some more searching, it turns out that Spawn.com quietly released a list of Wal-Mart stores that DO carry the Halo 3 figures. You can download the list right here at the following address: http://www.spawn.com/news/images/halo3s1.walmart.us.pdf

Checking the list, I did find a Wal-Mart store that did carry the Halo 3 toy line about 25 minutes from me and I made a quick trip there today to verify if this list was correct. It was! Unfortunately most of the Halo 3 toys were already sold out,but I did find a lot of Brutes, Grunts and even a Cortana, so the list is correct on what locations do sell the toys. Unfortunately it looks like I may have to hit eBay for my blue Spartans. Hopefully this helps out people who have been checking Wal-Marts daily for a Halo 3 toy fix.

Windows Media Connect firewall ports

Are you trying to stream music, pictues or videos from your Windows Media Connect computer on your Xbox 360?
Is it not working?
Do you get "PC selected failed" when you test the connection?

Basically you are not able to play music because you have a firewall programme installed on your PC blocking the connection between the Xbox 360 and the computer. And this firewall is something other than Windows firewall.
For the Xbox 360 and the computer to communicate there should be some ports opened on your Firewall programme on the PC. (Windows firewall already opens the correct ports for the communication between the Computer and the Xbox 360)

To open these firewall ports, you must know the name of the program, the port that the program needs, and the direction of the communication signal.
Below are the ports that you should open for Windows Media Connect based PC:

For the manual setting of your firewall, you'll need to check the firewall documentation.
