Why Not Competitive Settings?

Having played Team Fortress 2 on the Xbox for over a year now, I have become, if I do say so myself, very good.

Now, I understand that this IS a game and, as such, should do its best to deliver good, clean fun. It has done that well, thanks to Valve, and the pacing is incomparable to any other multiplayer FPS in existence.

But as I get better and better, the more and more I am spotting a hole in the game: it does not translate smoothly into a competitive fashion.

Especially for the clans, poor guys. They could use an Xbox LIVE way of organizing things. Of course, they have made other outlets for our clans that are fantastic, such as this site, but surely being able to join a game as a group would be better for them.

Anyway, the main problem arises in the gameplay. Unless you hack/cheat/mod, there is no way to set up a fair, competitive, skill-based game, which I am desiring more daily. This is very different than the PC version, where all of the clans change settings to make the game more competitive.

It isn't unfair glitching, its just common sense, and I wish that XBox players could have the option to change the game to "competitive mode" or some stupid name like that. What would competitive mode entail? It would be something like this:

-No random critical hits
-Static damage (instead of dynamic)
-The ability to set class caps
-Friendly fire (turn on or off)
-Vote Kicking

Basically, a lot of little tweaks that would change the game drastically. Since the update has taken so long anyway, I don't see why Valve shouldn't take another day or two and write coding for this gaming option.

I know it would mean a lot to me to filter out the silent players in the community and search for a game that almost certainly would have better teamwork and a more serious perspective. And for clans, this would make all the difference in the world.

Nice product (2009-03-13)
This is a great headset for the money. Sounds great, comfortable, mic works great. I use it for gaming and its perfect. It has a long cord which is good in a way but also tend to be a little cumbersome. I guess if it had a rectractable cord it would make it a little easier to deal with. But overall this is a great value.

Pleasantly surprised (2009-02-27)
I was not expecting much from a 25 dollar headset but it has proven to have good sound and to be very comfortable. I actually prefer it to my much more expensive logitech clearchat pro behind the ear one my wife bought me for christmas.

didn't last (2009-02-10)
I've owned this headset for about 4 months. The setup is a little peculiuar, but I loved it right away. The pads over the ears are very soft and apply just the right pressure. I was able to wear these for quite a while.

The microphones go out on headsets; that is just a fact of life. This mic goes out a little more often and quickly than many others. Mine died in about 2 months. The headphones are so good, I just move the mic boom out of the way and listen with them still. The microphone is adjustable and while it worked others told me my voice sounded very clear.

Great Gaming Headset (2009-01-06)
I bought this product mainly because it got great reviews and it was reasonably priced. I could not agree with the positive reviews more! The headset is really light, does not pinch my ears or squish my head(even when wearing glasses) and I have a big noggin! The earpieces are comfortable and have really good sound. The mic isn't as flexible as some, but I haven't had any trouble finding the right spot. I wear this headset for many hours at a time (WOW addict) and have not had any problems with it.
I have owned this headset for about 2 months now and am completely pleased with it. It seems pretty durable and the long cord is plus. A GREAT BUY for the price! A must have for any hard-core gamer!

Serves the purpose (2008-11-22)
The headset has a nice sound quality. I'm not an expert but if you just looking for a decent headset it will satisfy you.
The microphone very clear and can be switched on or off. A volume regulation is attached to the cord.

Amazon.com
Halo 2 is one of those rare video games that garnishes attention from regular folk who wouldn't know which direction to point a game controller. With more than 1.5 million pre-orders and a massive release party in Times Square, the game enjoys the sort of buzz, and sales, generally reserved for boy wizards. But does it merit the hype?

Opening Scene

Halo 2 opens with a cut scene in the Covenant Holy City of High Charity. Much has happened since Master Chief (that's you) created so much havoc for the Covenant in the first Halo, and the Arbiter has much atoning to do for his failures. This first cut scene is long, but the lush graphics, orchestral sound, and polished voice talent for both this and other cut scenes as well as the game itself put most animated television shows to shame.

Much has happened since Master Chief created so much havoc for the Covenant in the first Halo, and the Arbiter has much atoning to do.

In the end, though, Halo 2 is unabashedly a first-person shooter. It has a Mature rating and is not meant for kids. Gameplay is constant and intense. No sooner is one bunch of aliens taken care of than another descends. The controls are identical to the first game so those familiar with it will be up and blasting in no time. And the sound and graphics have been beefed up so that Halo 2 is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful console games available.

Opening Fire

Most of the weapons from the first game return, although strangely the MA5B Assault Rifle (the default weapon in the first game) is not available. There is a single melee weapon known as the Covenant Sword, but the controls for it are the same as that for all the shooter weapons, making it difficult to direct. Also, for a new twist, you can hold two of the smaller guns at the same time and shoot double-fisted.

As for vehicles, the old favorites are back and joined by a few new, mostly Covenant wheeled monsters. Some improvements have been made to the AI so that the nonplayer characters can drive without running into too many obstacles while you man the turret. This improved AI also has enemies ducking for cover, and the banter from both the Marines and the bad guys has undergone massive improvements so that it no longer sounds quite so repetitive.

On Your Own

The most significant change in the single-player game is with Master Chief's much-touted defensive suit. At the beginning of the game, he is told that the suit has been upgraded, but it's really undergone a severe downgrade. In Halo 2, the player has only one lifeline. Unlike in the first game, there is basically no defensive shield on the suit, making gameplay tougher. It can often take multiple--sometimes a maddening number--attempts to make it through thorny parts of the game.

Or with a Friend

Finally, no review of a Halo game is complete without mentioning multiplayer. One of the main reasons to buy Halo 2 is the ability to play through Xbox Live, a feature not included in the first game, which was among the original releases for the Xbox. Multiplayer for Halo 2 uses all of the same weapons and vehicles as in the single-player game, and the types of games available in Halo (King of the Hill, Slayer, Capture the Flag) return with a host of new maps. Multiplayer Halo 2 offers customizable profiles, control layout, and screens as well as a voice proximity feature, where you can talk with other players via an Xbox Communicator so that those closer to you sound louder than those farther away. Players can also create both permanent clans and temporary parties in the Xbox Live world. Undoubtedly, this multiplayer feature alone ensures that Halo 2 will remain a top-selling game for years to come. --David Morel

Pros:

  • Lush graphics and orchestral sound
  • Constant, thumping shoot-'em-up action
  • Multiplayer available through Xbox live

Cons:

  • Suit downgrade makes single-player often overly difficult
  • Get ready for some bleary-eyed mornings

Better than Halo (2009-03-23)
Halo 2 improved over Halo with better controls, dual wielding, and a few new weapons and enemies. One should be prepared for a little confusion, you not only fight as the master chief, in some chapters you fight as an enemy called the arbiter. I found this somewhat confusing and did not really care for playing the arbiter, it seemed like I was betraying my side. While it is a fun game, there are others I like much better.

Sweet game!!! (2009-03-13)
I own Halo Combat Evolved (Halo 1) and its pretty good but when I played Halo 2 at my cousins house it blew Evolved right of the map! Great graphics, awesome game play, about 1000 different weapons (alien and UNSC). You get to play as the alien traitor "THE ARBITER" and Master Chief (rip out guts tough as nails type of guy). Unfortunately as "THE ARBITER" you can's kill humans. Story lines...eh... who am I kiding it sucked but ya' know, ya' win some ya' lose some. I strongly recommend this game! Oh, buy the way this game wouldn't be rated M if when you whack a flood (zombie like creatures) they kinda' explode.

Just as good as the original. (2009-03-13)
Even though it shouldn't have to be said, this game is really good. Really good. If you ever played the first Halo, "Halo: Combat Evolved", then you should immediatly buy this sequel. You won't be dissapointed. My only complaint about this game is the missing Assault Rifle, but it was easy to get over because of the added in SMG. If you play Halo 2, I guarantee you won't ever be able to get enough of it. And just incase you do, I suggest you go buy a 360 and get Halo 3. Just trust me on this one, would I lie to you?

The game that brought xbox its glory. Halo Combat Evolved. Ambitious and Exciting. (2009-02-11)
Halo 2 is a great game with quality flare and just about everything imaginable to back it up. There is no true flaw to this game but nothing exactly in the game feels non-stop. Not to say that there isn't moments where you just can't help but scream "I love this game", but there could be more heart pounding scences.

Halo like many FPS's has a pretty bland story and you feel yourself just skipping many story elements for the basic fact that they are too long. The game exceeds any game of it's time but feel as if "we've done this before right?". Halo has many vehicles to choose from, Tanks, Aircrafts and hovercrafts. The one thing though is that there is not a wide array to choose from and the aircraft you see most in the game you cannot even pilot it.

One of the changes from the old game is now you are able to use a sword and believe me many people wanted it in the game. It can be difficult to use it as the sword loses power everytime you attack an object. There is only one sword to choose from which doesn't help the lack of weapons. You do go through many weapons but it can feel all too easy to get caught up using one weapon. In intense levels though you frequently must pick up another weapon to battle the aliens that want to kill you.

A few things in the game are destructible but not enough to feel like that much of an intense firefight. Many of the times instead you will see the marks of a shot in the wall or the blood of you or your enemies, which makes it feel like a warzone after it is all said and done. Many times in the game you have A.I controlled partners who are extremely smart in fact if they see you killing too many of them they will start to fire back at you and eventually kill you if you don't kill them.

The multiplayer easily is the best thing about this game. There are over 10 maps to choose from each with a different scenery from the next and there are a few revamped old school maps. The thing that makes the multiplayer s great is co-op when fighting with a friend against two other friends it feels so real and alive that you burst out with excitement. You can customize just about everything in the level from the weapons it will have on it to the vehicles it will have on it.

More over the game never has that many dull moments although in campaign backtracking can feel wierd and you get lost easily. The game is not a rent it's a buy the game is the best game on the xbox to date and when its sequel comes out for xbox 360 you can bet it will be a hit too.

Halo 2 (2009-02-09)
This game was everything I hoped it would be. The campaign mode was very enjoyable to play all the way through. The story line was an interesting continuation of the first Halo game. I really liked the plot and how I got to play two different characters that opposed each other in the first halo and eventually cross paths. It was a very fun game to play. The multiplayer online and offline game play is also always fun. Good stuff.

Take Comfort in Your Skill

It has been a couple days since my last post, but I have good reason. This new post has taken a bit more elbow grease on my part than usual (even worse than editing artwork of controllers on Paint.)

It all started when I began to think of the usual responses from PC gamers about the disadvantages of being a console gamer. Most of them I find acceptable, like lack of updates and the inability to create maps. But there has always been one that has bothered me a bit more than the others: CONSOLE GAMERS HAVE LESS SKILL.

This never, ever made sense to me. At what point did the game require less skill? If everyone on a computer games with a mouse, their controls are equal, creating an equal playing field in that respect. Similarly, everyone on the Xbox 360 uses the same standard controller. If the level of threat is equal from everyone, when does the PC users abilities make more influence against other players? The answer is that it doesn't.

Certainly, if a PC gamer came along with a mouse onto an Xbox 360 match, they would probably be extremely successful because the mouse is a superior input device. Instead of going through this much thought, however, PC gamers, instead, say that they have superior skill. This is completely untrue. In fact, if our input device is inferior and we accomplish the same things, that would actually require more skill.

When I had made peace with this, I heard another comment that deeply disturbed me. I was told that Team Fortress 2 on the Xbox 360 had auto-aim. "It isn't true," I told myself, "every frag of mine is my own, not assisted by some coding!"

"Maybe it wasn't so bad," I thought after awhile, "many 360 games use auto-aim, like Halo 3 or even Call of Duty 4. Heck, even Half-Life 2 used auto-aim on the PC!" My confidence was growing again, but only on the surface, and I would often remember this comment when I went on a 15 kill streak or sniped a Scout that was right in my face.

Soon after, I had my first air-shot kill with the Rocket Launcher (one of the most exhilarating moments of my gaming career, coming close to winning that Strider battle at the end of Episode Two.) But the experience became less exciting when I realized that it had been the game, not me, who had shot that soaring Soldier.

Then it hit me fast and hard. I had predicted that movement, not the computer. Auto-aim didn't make one difference in this case. I felt real success and I now considered Soldier to be a class of ridiculous skill because he couldn't rely on auto-aim.

But sometimes I still thought about auto-aim, and the more I played, the more I'd think about it. I began to watch my reticule while I played. Did it ever bend towards players? Could I miss by just a little and still do damage? When I was sighted in and I took my thumbs off the sticks, did my reticule follow the enemy?

The answers to these answers were all, surprisingly, NO, and in one day, months of discontent became confusion. How was auto-aim implemented if it did none of these things? Then I did something I should have done much earlier. I asked Robin Walker.

In his own words:
Hi Neal.
Nope, there's no auto-aim on the Xbox.

Robin.

So now I can take comfort in my skill. That is, unless I get lucky.

Gravel Pit

Capture Point A:

This point is the hardest for RED to defend of the three on the map, probably because it is the furthest away from the spawn of the two initial defensible positions.

A clever Soldier or Demoman on team BLU can make it up to the point very quickly because much of the travel distance is vertical from the exit tunnels. A Sniper on either team can have a tremendous impact on the outcome of this point because the arena is basically a narrow strip. However, many objects obscure the view of players, and the upward slope can lead to a limited view for a BLU Sniper.

With all the height options here, a Scout can flank easily, while remaining mostly unseen. To slow down the Scouts, the single health pack is stored on the inside of a small building, forcing the Scout to move in a predictable fashion to retrieve it.

It is an excellent idea to have RED Pyro wait by the largest health pack (directly beneath the point), ready to spring into action if BLU begins to capture and essentially lockdown the health pack from BLU opponents.

Putting a Teleporter Exit in a clever hiding place near this point can mean the difference between losing the point and letting it get captured. Sentries are less useful on this point due to the long sightlines for Soldiers and Snipers to shoot them down.

All these factors mean that Point A is usually captured first, making every defensive decision surrounding it become extremely tense. The mission of RED should be slightly kamikaze because it is so unlikely that Point A will be saved from capture. Therefore, it is important that RED delay BLU for as long as possible here, but also to sacrifice it when saving it becomes unrealistic in order to defend A or B.

Some of the greatest chainstabs I've ever had have happened immediately after BLU captures A and they are headed to B. The emotional high of success can lead to them letting their guard down temporarily, so good Spies should capitalize on this opportunity. I know I do.

Capture Point B:

Following that terrible lead in to Point B's Introduction, some of you might not be taking it seriously enough. I cannot let that happen. Point B is one of the best map elements of any game I have ever played.

Standing about an equal distance from both RED and BLU's spawns, the Point B Building is likely to be in contention for a majority of the match. Much like a Teleporter Exit near Point A, a Soldier or Demoman on the roof of the Point B building provides an enormous amount of leverage. Note: If you are Engineer that get to this rooftop (without hacking), I highly suggest you build a Sentry farm up there. It is nigh impenetrable and a Teleporter Exit there can provide quick reinforcements.

A Spy can wreak havoc on RED defenses here because they can convincingly come in from any direction. Scouts can also be very effective on either team because they have a wide range of motion outside the building without every having to risk going inside, on the capture point.

In other words, it allows Scouts to impact the match without going where the Sentries are (something that Dustbowl has failed to do.) At the same time, once the Sentries are eliminated, the Scout can rush in and capture from any number of entrances.

If RED stays inside the building, they will eventually be bombarded to death from the outside, but if the team can keep BLU busy outside, a Heavy and a Pyro can clean up anybody that breaks through. RED Pyros also have an extra bite because BLU cannot return to spawn to douse the flames. A single BLU Medic can solve this problem, if BLU has one (it should.)

Stopping BLU from capturing Point B is fairly easy to do, even if they manage to collect a good presence there. If the point is almost captured, a good strategy for RED would be to split their ranks between setting up camp at C and sending one more squad to B. If B gets captured before the squad reaches BLU, they can at least disrupt their forward movement to C, giving the other squad more time to get ready.

Capture Point C:

Valve's intent, when creating this part of the map (according to the Developer Commentary), was to enforce a free-form battle until a decisive victory of one team was discernible. This invokes images of a fierce, climactic struggle.

This is stamped all to hell by a Spy decloaking on the point right after it becomes available. However, I cannot deny that this is a superb strategy. Even if this doesn't work, it shakes up team RED pretty badly, and soon they are making hectic, irrational decisions, such as Demomen trying to sticky-jump to the point using three stickies.

Since there are five separate entrances to the arena, team BLU has a lot of opportunity to cause chaos. Team RED can also flank from lots of areas, making Spies and Scouts even more useful than usual.

With point C being at the top of a large vertical building, a Solidier or Demoman has a lot of chances to rocket/sticky jump to attack or defend. Besides being a practical way to ascend the ramps quickly, it is also a great way to impress your friends.

Snipers will be right at home if they take the passage from A to attack the defenders on Point C. Conversely, a Pyro can make themselves usefull by periodically flushing out that area of the map of enemies.

All-in-all, Point C provides a lovely finish to a well-designed map. When you look at it, you begin to understand why Team Fortress 2 took nine years to make.

Suggested Improvements:
BLU has a small lead in the statistics, so measures to help RED win should be minor, not dramatic. The geometry is great, so my suggestion would be to have RED's respawns happen a little more frequently after Point C becomes available for capture.

If You Haven't Yet, It's Time To Optimize your Controller

One of the earliest problems I had while playing Team Fortress 2 was that I felt limited by the control scheme that Valve had set for me to play with. After much tweaking, these are the controls I have settled on.

The reason I like this way of playing so much is that you never have to take your thumbs off of the movement/aiming sticks while performing actions that require precise movement/aiming.

For example, you don't need to make aiming adjustments while reloading, switching weapons, or taunting. At the same time, it is easy to dodge and attack simultaneously without any trouble.

Setting the controls this way also makes crouch-jumping incredibly easy and Rocket/Sticky Jumping possible. To further increase the simplicity, I would suggest switching the crouch from Toggle to Hold.

Finally, the most critical thing you can do to your controls to improve your game is to adjust your sensitivity so that it is as high as possible. It may seem challenging at first, but in the end, it allows you to defend yourself much more quickly, and to attack both accurately and with a better response time.

And for those of you who really want to take it to the next level in any FPS title, I would highly recommend you invest $10 in these Kontrol Freeks. They may look bizarre, but they make sense scientifically. The greater leverage supplied by the extensions allows for minuscule aiming adjustments that are otherwise impossible.

I can testify that they have improved my skill significantly, and they are quite sturdy, so don't worry about them getting broken. Good gaming!

Introduction

I bought my Xbox 360 almost 18 months ago, but the year prior to that was quite a struggle.

A lot of issues come up when you consider the affordability of an Xbox 360. I chose to budget myself, yet I didn't want to lose anything by spending less. And so the research began in January 2007. I had price checked, literally, hundreds of sites by the time I began to narrow my focus to just a few. I had to factor in so many things, such as Shipping&Handling charges as well as seasonal bargains that would no longer exist by the time I had gathered enough spending ability.

My list of essentials began to shrink with time, with my overlying goal soon entailing the gather of as many resources as possible with an expense of less than $800. I might remind you, at this point, that the average price of an Xbox 360 at that time was about $400, so it wasn't as easy as it would be nowadays.

I needed to have two controllers (costing about $100 together), a Play-n-Charge Kit ($25 that I didn't want to spend on batteries later), and my own television set (a $100 hard-to-find beauty that I suggest you take a look at).

Do the math, and you'll realize that I was left approximately $175. With that much I couldn't even afford to have three new games. The level of frustration was so high now that I almost decided to buy a good camera instead.
But I collected myself and brought forth a new level of dedication to the cause. It wasn't so bad, I thought, and I wasn't to give up on an idea I'd been working on for 8 months. So began the research into which games I wanted.

I quickly decided that I would try to get one good game for each of the major genres: FPS, RTS, RPG, Action/Adventure, Racing, Sports, and Music. The only obvious choice to me was to purchase Halo 3. Yes, marketing and advertising does work when the hype train starts to roll.

Other games were more difficult to find. Racing went to Burnout Revenge. Action/Adventure went to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (included in the package I bought.) On and on the list went, but I wanted more.

That is when, by strange chance, I discovered a preview for Portal. I fell in love instantly. The innovateness of Portal is subtle but undeniable. After Portal, I read a review for The Orange Box. Suddenly, Halo 3 was out the window forever and The Orange Box reigned supreme.

Halo Uprising #4 review.

After almost a year of delays, Halo Uprising #4 has finally hit store shelves. Who would of thought that a comic series with the Halo name stamped on it would suffer so many delays and after all this time, such a lackluster finish…

Halo Uprising is a four issue mini series that was suppose to bridge the gap between Halo 2 and Halo 3 and give Halo players some insight on what was going on during that period. What we get is a sappy love story about about a coward and a pop singer and a key that could change to face of the universe. The big plot shock: that key turns out to never exist in the first place. Oh yeah, the comic also has a few panels of Master Chief kicking ass, we have to have those.

Issue 4 kicks off with more sappy love story crap,a high-ranking official yelling at the coward, the coward taking a dangerous mission and in the end blowing a covenant ship to holy hell. If this sounds even remotely interesting, its not. The artwork itself is pretty cool, but the story just pretty much falls flat on its face. For a comic mini-series that ran for two years and only produced four issues, there’s no excuse that there wasn’t enough time to make this thing awesome. Most Halo fans should skip it unless they lack the final piece of the puzzle to a let down of a series.

Issues 4 rating: 1 out of 5 stars.

Halo Uprising mini-series review: 2 out of 5 stars.

GameStop Follow-Up Post

I wanted to post a short follow-up to my GameStop Employee Checkout piece, based on some comments I've received. I did first want to point out that GameStop is evidently reviewing its policies in this regard, so I doubt we've heard the last about this.

First, my suggestion to reprint box art has been brought up a number of times, and I wanted to point out that I expressly said 'with permission.' I can't imagine publishers having issue with the proposed practice, as it would be to sell their products. Additionally, I only mentioned making dummy boxes as one potential solution, albeit one with a high upfront cost to outfit each store with a set of blank boxes and the ongoing cost of reprinting paper inserts as new games are released. Another, possibly more cost effective solution would be to create cardboard cards with the front and back of the box replicated on the cardboard. I have no idea which would cost more, or what other solutions might work, but the point was to suggest a solution by which no new games would need to be opened and gutted or placed outside the safety of the behind the counter locking cabinet.

Second, I can certainly understand why people would be upset to receive an open game, or even be unable to accept one in certain circumstances (i.e. gift giving). However, I still think that if the plastic seal is not a major issue, there is no difference in the game experience between a perfect condition new disk and a perfect condition disk played once by an employee, besides the potential public relations issues. Of course, when I say perfect condition, I mean everything: kept in a smoke free environment, free of dirt, not kept in direct sunlight or damaging temperatures, etc. I believe that's a major factor as to why the GameStop employees I've known are far more likely to check out a used title than a new one.

Finally, for the record, I do shop at GameStop frequently, largely because it's the only retailer where I have been able to consistently pre-order and pick up on release date high demand titles, limited edition titles, obscure titles that don't tend to show up much if at all in big box stores (i.e. new releases by NIS), and new hardware. I haven't personally had any problems with the stores I've frequented over the years, including the GameStop store near my home I currently use. Perhaps this, like other situations, varies a lot based on individual store management, but it's difficult to say.

GameStop's Employee Checkout and Deceptive Trade Practices

Kotaku recently ran a piece noting that the FTC may be interested in the 'employee check out' policy in terms of a deceptive trade practice. The article goes into some detail about the ability of GameStop employees to check out titles from the store on a temporary basis, and in the event these titles are 'new,' then they are brought back in and resold as new. It certainly poses an interesting question: is that a deception to the consumer?

Before talking about substantive law and my take on the issue, I did want to point out one particular clause in the policy, as posted by Kotaku: "If the product is returned in unsellable condition, or if anything is missing from the package, or if the product is not returned, the Associate must purchase the product at the current price less Associate discount." As I have known quite a few GameStop employees over the years, I know that this part of the policy greatly deters the checking out of new games in favor of used ones. After all, even the slightest inclination that a new game isn't 'new' will more than likely force the employee to buy the game, which many of these employees can't afford. A used game has an expected level of wear and tear, so the bar is much lower for the return to store condition.

So, back to the point at hand: is this a deceptive trade practice? There's both a legal and a pragmatic approach to the answer of this question. From a legal standpoint, ignoring any pragmatic analysis, it certainly seems that way from the letter of the law. Certainly, it's something the FTC could investigate, but more practically, it may be a matter for state deceptive trade practices law. In Texas, for example, it is a deceptive trade practice if you are "representing that goods are original or new if they are deteriorated, reconditioned, reclaimed, used, or secondhand."

Of course, the law does not exist in a vacuum, and from a practical standpoint, I'm not sure what GameStop is doing is as nefarious as some people seem to think. The resale of used goods as new rules had a simple policy argument: when they were implemented, practically all goods had a limited useful life, and any use of them would lessen that useful life. If I re-sold a used console, the console's useful life has diminished. If I re-sold a used TV, that TV's life has diminished. That's not exactly the case with a DVD based media. DVDs do in fact deteriorate, but that's something with a clock that begins from production based on normal biodegrading. If a disk has been properly used in a machine and properly handled, has its life been diminished? I haven't seen any data to suggest that it's anything at all, much less anything significant.

Obviously, if the disk, packaging, or other materials are damaged in any way, or if one-time use download codes are used during the check-out, there is no question that reselling that as new would likely be a deceptive act. Of course, the damages would be relatively minute ($5 or so based on the average new release's used price), which could provide difficulty in generating an actual lawsuit over the issue. However, when the disk is cared for and no damage comes to any aspect of the product, has its value actually been reduced? No, and the content of the product is still 100% present. It's a little more nebulous with respect to DS games, as the last of the cartridge systems. I don't know if they have a useful life as determined by play time or not.

From a practical standpoint, I still don't see why GameStop hasn't moved to reproducing cover art with publisher permission and just re-using empty cases so that no titles have to be opened. Granted, that would basically limit employee check out to used titles, but I'm not sure that's a huge loss to the average employee as many new releases are in short enough supply to prevent check out by the policy as reported by Kotaku anyway. It will certainly be interesting to see if the FTC takes any action on this matter, but from a pragmatic standpoint, I'm not sure they will based on the facts.

[EDIT: I've posted some follow-up commentary here.]

Product Description
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes you into the distant past of the Star Wars universe -- over 4,000 years before Episode I, when battles raged between the Jedi and the Sith!
Amazon.com Review
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Only the Force powers of the Jedi Bastila prevented the Sith from overwhelming the Republic's weakened forces. At the start of the game Malak has usurped control of the Sith by betraying Revan and has attacked the ship carrying Bastila and yourself. In true Star Wars style, the game begins with a bang.

The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure told with humor, compassion, and respect for the source material. Your character has a mystical bond with Bastila, and the two of you share some kind of connection to the Sith villains Darth Malak and Darth Revan. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's sudden fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People.

Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system--anyone who has played Dungeons & Dragons will be familiar with the abilities, stats, feats, and bonuses in this game. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a Mandolorian. Unlike the faceless non-player characters of other games, each member of the supporting cast has an intriguing history and even agenda. Up to two of these other characters can join your character at any time. Depending on who you chose to take with you, new dialogue and even intra-party arguments come into the game (put the Mandalorian veteran with the Republic patriot and you'll see sparks fly). Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item.

Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Building and character models are not impressive--about what you get in GTA 3. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and weather) bring the world to life. Battles are just brilliant, with characters pumping out blaster fire at Jedi who dash, dodge, and even deflect the bolts back toward their assailants. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars.

All in all, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests, and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. Consider this a must-have game.--Mike Fehlauer

Pros:

  • Captivating storyline
  • Clever dialogue
  • Star Wars feel
  • True story and dialogue support for either Light Side or Dark Side play
  • Brilliant combat graphics
  • Fascinating characters (the loyal--and homicidal--droid HK-47 is truly unique)
Cons:
  • Occasional bugs in dialogue, movie playback
  • Cannot transfer equipped gear between characters while on your ship

Is this REALLY Star Wars? (2009-03-17)
The first time I played this game, it seemed confusing, and then when I went into combat, it didn't seem very good. After 10 minutes, I thought, "WOW! THIS IS STUPID!" It really was! Then I found out that this game was a RPG (I'm not fond of RPG) Star Wars was never meant to be a RPG, it was meant to be an Action, Adventure, and Shooter kind of game. What do you think "War" means. War=Action, Adventure, Shooter. War doesn't= RP and Strategy games. This is the first Star Wars game that ever let me down! Please don't get it! Get Battlefront and Battlefront II, they're alot better!

It is a awesome game (2009-03-03)
The game was awesome and a great buy, its fun and exciting to play I enjoy it very much

I Love This Game (2009-01-12)
all i'm going to say is that this is the best star wars game EVER!!!! and i'm not a role playing game person. anybody can get into this game.

One of the best games I've ever played (2008-12-21)
I love a good rpg and this one has all my favorite elements of what makes one great. As a bonus it also is Star Wars themed, something I also love, and features some of John Williams awesome theme music.
This was my favorite game until I played Mass effect, also by Bioware, but it remains a strong second. I simply love this game. It has one of the best and most immersive storylines I've ever seen in a game. There are plot twists and unexpected developments throughout the game. You have numerous choices to make, and some of the choices effect the outcome of the game. There are a large number of quests, including many optional ones and and you may choose to take a good or evil path or something in between. There are numerous well developed characters who can join your party, each with their own personality. They may help or hinder you, during quests or even leave the party or turn on you depending on your actions. You have influence with the characters and it depends largely on your action and your choices.
The storyline is simply excellent, the sound effects and graphics are excellent, music is excellent, and the buildings/scenarios are unique and diverse. The endings are excellent and one of the best I've ever seen in a game. I really enjoyed playing this game.
The only cons I think of is the combat, which I didn't mind because this is an rpg first. The combat is automatic and you don't do much except direct your characters to use certain abilities or weapons or to attack certain foes. Otherwise they simply fight automatically. Again this didn't bother me at all, but 1st person shooter fans, might have issue with this.

Sorry, I think this is one of the WORST Star Wars games (2008-10-15)
I picked this game up a few months back. I got it because I just got through with Mass Effect and loved that game. Well the folks who did Mass Effect for the most part also had a hand in making this Star Wars game, Knights of the Old Republic.

I'll make this short, because I think some people need to know just how flipping boring this game is. The dialogue is okay. You have to read it, and there is no actual speach. I can live with that, especially since this game did come out a few years back.

However, the action sequences are left the game found wanting. You press a button, and watch your characters do all the work. "Wow. That's it?!" Is what I thought to myself. I'm not much of an RPG guy, but when I hear the words "ACTION" and "FUN TO PLAY" associated with it, I tend to think their might be some challenging action scenes to go along with a game with story line. You know, something like Deus Ex, or Mass Effect. Heck, even the Final Fantasy guys get it right year after year. I say all of that, so I don't get people flaming me saying I just don't like RPGs. I do like RPGs, just the good ones.

I felt like I was being spoon fed everything to continue on with the game. It wasn't challenging at all. I had to quit after playing this game for about an hour. I kept telling myself it will get better, and it never did.

Sorry folks, but Star Wars games like the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series, Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, and even the Rebel Assault games were better than this crap.

You want a good RPG from Bioware? Play Mass Effect. You want a good RPG period? Play Lost Odyssey, or Diablo, or Titan's Quest, or the Elder Scrolls series, or the Fallout series, or Final Fantasy. Just not this game.

Works great (2009-03-11)
I just got a new LCD tv. I mainly use my modded xbox to watch movies. The regular a/v cables just weren't cutting it. So I got these component cables. They work great. Games look fantastic with them. If you have copies of movies on your xbox these cables help out a lot. The movies won't be of hd quality but they do look pretty good.

no difference (2009-03-06)
I see no difference with this cable compared to the original Xbox cable, but I am probably doing something wrong.

Perfect cable, beautiful picture, better than Monster (2009-01-31)
I bought one of these cables about a year ago to use on my new HDTV. As many people will tell you, the difference between component and composite (RCA) is night and day on an HDTV. This cable improves the quality of original Xbox games quite a bit, and playing games like Black (2006, Criterion) comes pretty damn close to a next-generation experience.

When I needed another cable for the Xbox running XBMC out in the family room, I foolishly bought the Monster Cable Xbox Component Video Cable for $25 during my local Circuit City's store closing. I thought the cable would be better than the Psyclone, because I had actually heard of Monster before, plus I didn't want to wait for this cable to arrive in the mail. Big mistake. The Monster cable actually did damage to my receiver, because the plugs were too snug-fitting, and now we have to run component video through the TV. Anyway, after damaging my receiver, the cable promptly fell apart. So I came to Amazon, ordered the Psyclone again, and was greeted with the same quality I got the first time.

These are great cables, and I will now trust Psyclone over Monster any day.

It's also worth mentioning that this cable will NOT work on an Xbox 360, as others have said. The port on the back of the original Xbox is more rectangular, and the Xbox 360 has a somewhat trapezoidal port. The two ports are not in any way compatible. Anyone who tells you this will work with the 360 is misinformed.

Works great. (2008-12-16)
Cable worked great. Both video and sound are so much better
with the component video and digital audio. Prompt delivery.

Very nice XBOX component cable with optical audio output (2008-11-02)
I needed a component video cable with optical audio ouput for use with an original Microsoft XBOX, and bought this Psyclone cable. Build quality is excellent for this cable assembly. My only gripe about this assembly is that the component video and analog audio cables are permanently attached to the adapter (I prefer removable cables) and are much longer than I require, but I knew this before purchasing and it doesn't effect the functionality of the unit. VERY recommended if you need a component video cable with optical audio output for an original Microsoft XBOX.
