Amazon.com Review
More often than not, when a game is in development for more than three years, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.

The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known as the Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shaped planet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to the player to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, the game offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemy and allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will use the terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to cover and aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump in and man the turret on the back of it.

The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per second rather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level design is among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging without being frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-in single-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes.

Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Halo raises the bar for console first-person shooters. All console action games will be measured against Halo for years to come. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Outstanding game design
  • High replay value
  • Impressive AI
Cons:
  • Several maps are used multiple times
  • Save functions could have been better implemented
  • Graphics move at 30 frames per second, not 60

Amazon.com Product Description
This action shooter takes place on a mysterious alien world. It offers a combination of team-based first-person-shooter gameplay (reminiscent of Tribes) and third-person vehicle combat elements. Gameplay kicks off with the player heading down to the planet's surface in a troop carrier, à la Aliens. As the player and fellow marines exit, the remaining troopers form a flank in reaction to an oncoming onslaught of human and alien enemies.

It's this smart AI system that makes for a noticeably unique gameplay feel. Another very nice feature is the seamless transition into vehicular elements. As you venture through mission objectives, a variety of enemy flyers and on-ground buggies are yours for the taking. Come across a vehicle and the camera will pull back to a third-person view as you strap in and motor through crossfire. A co-op mode allows a friend to join you in the single-player missions. For chaotic fighting action, up to four players can duel in split-screen deathmatch mode or link systems for LAN play. However you choose to hero your way through Halo: Combat Evolved, the action should break in your new Xbox in explosive style.

Great game with great single-player expierence (2009-04-02)
Halo is a very addicting and fun first person shooter that launched the Xbox system off the ground when all hope for the Microsoft platform seemed to have gone. The science-fiction based game works because of its intense cut scenes, and shocking plot twists, but what really makes it work is the feeling that your character (Master Chief) seems like one who really does serve a purpose in the military and that he is a part of the marines in their fight against an alien force. Most of the rest of the plot found in Halo is typical sci-fi shooter, but it's the atmosphere they manage to create with this game is what keeps it from being thrown in a bin of useless Half-Life and Doom knock-offs.

Gameplay: The controls are great and are easy to learn (both on Xbox original and 360) and do not offer you much difficulty so you can get into the action quickly without having to spend much time experimenting with the controls. Only problem I had with the gameplay is for the most part the weapons are inaccurate and it makes you think: "Isn't this supposed to be the future? This assault rifle is about as accurate as an air-soft pistol."

Graphics: considering it is one of the first Xbox games ever made I have to say that the graphics really manage to hold up to this day.

Story: The Human vs. Aliens concept has been used to death in the video gaming industry so Bungie makes a wise choice and decides NOT to concentrate entirely on fighting aliens as that would quickly grow boring. They throw in some rescue missions and support operations which make your character feel that you are actually do something to help. Of course later on the game we come to an uninspired "random zombie parasite," but they make such a chilling cut scene that you are able to forget that this type of thing happens in just about every FPS sci-fi game EVER MADE.

Entertainment: Halo: Combat Evolved is immensely entertaining and will have you angrily messing with it for days as you try to beat all the difficulty settings.

This game is a much better single-player experience than its two sequels that suffer from over-simplicity and lacking ANY sign of intensity. I don't care how much Bungie spits and polishes this series or how many weapons and power-ups they add it still won't change that they've turned the series into a Rambo style shooter and there are HUNDREDS of games like that already on the market.

If they ever make another Halo game they need to go back to the basics and really see why the first game is still the most popular entry in the series.

Really entertaining! (2009-03-13)
I had this game at first for the computer, and I really liked it, but I only borrowed it from a friend, and didn't have time to finish the main story. Recently, I ordered this game from here, and now, after almost finishing the main story, I have to say, it really is just as fun as any good, new, Xbox 360 game on the market today. The action is still just as real as it was back when it came out. Halo: Combat Evolved is a cannot miss experience for any gamer that is either a fan of first person shooters, or void of any amazingly good classics. In a few years, you'll look back on this review after you've bought this game, and thank me.

A 13 Year Olds Opinion... (2009-03-04)
Halo's a really fun game. You start off as Master Chief who wakes up from being frozen in a tube for a period of time. You have to learn how to move and get your health up and do all the boring stuff... then there's a big crash and these aliens come in and shoot the head off some guy up-stairs, so you run for your life! then the guy in front of you blows up and you're alone for a little while. once you finally get off the ship you fall into Halo and the fun picks up and runs. i played on Normal for the first 4 levels then moved on to Legendary after getting used to the controls, it turns out Legendary is waaay to hard for me, so i just went back to Normal, and eventually Easy. the levels can get boring, but never repetitive.

PROS -Good Story
-Easy Controlls
-Great Graphics for a 2002 Game
-One of The Best Games on XBOX-XBOX 360 in My Opinion

CONS -Halo 2 and 3 Are Better
-Can Get Boring (Level 4 Is)
-Everybody Sounds The Same (there's an australian voice, and alien voice, and the captain's voice... the rest are like an average guy, except for Cortana)

i'd say buy it if you want a great game, but if you're expecting an unbeatable game you MAY get disappointed.

The Best Game for the Xbox (2009-02-04)
Halo: Combat Evolved is an instant classic, bar none. The gameplay is addictive, the graphics are great, the score is incredible, and the story is truly epic. If you are looking for something good in a game, Halo has it.

First off, the single-player campaign is great. The gameplay so much fun that you'll find yourself playing each level over and over. Next, the multiplayer picks up where the campaign leaves off. The customization of each gametype allows for a great deal creativity that is sure to launch many late-night LANs.

The other components (soundtrack, graphics, story) are just as incredible as the rest of the game. If you own an Xbox, your library is not complete without a copy of Halo.

MY FIRST GAME (2009-01-28)
This is the first game that I, Master Chief, ever starred in.

While it's a bit rough around the edges and I've got a new look and more personality, the original "HALO: Combat Evolved" remains one of my favorite projects of all time.

Please take a chance and try my earliest project. I think you'll like it.
