Review Bearers of the Black Staff (Legends of Shannara)
Bearers of the Black Staff (Legends of Shannara) Best Review
Just finished BEARERS OF THE BLACK STAFF, and it's intriguing the way the Word & Void mythos has really become an integral part of the Shannara series. And its frustrating that we have to wait a whole year for the follow up to this bad boy, since it ends right when the story is kicking into high gear.
I do believe this book (one of a two book short series) does effectively continue the Shannara mythos enough to satisfy its fans, but I think this book somehow manages to remain accessible for those who haven't read any of the series. If you've read Word & Void (contemporary urban mythology), and you've read the classic Shannara novels (fantasy adventure), then the style of writing Brooks utilizes in this book is kind of a merging of both styles. I personally found this appealing.
I can't help but be impressed with how good Brooks is at being a craftsman. He is a master of storytelling.. clear, precise, and experienced. He takes you into his world, and lets you really visualize everything with his words. He is painting pictures that we can see in our imaginations, and he makes it all seem real. He starts off with a few plots... then interweaves them... pulls out some surprises and twists... all the way maintaining a solid architecture that makes for a good time reading. He caught me by surprise a few times, and the whole time I'm thinking... is (this character) going to die? Because, characters do perish in this one.
I read this in three days... a relaxed pace for me... and I wanted more. That's why I hate waiting a whole year for the next book! Not many books grab me from the beginning... but Terry's books always do that for me. That's why he's one of my favorite authors.
BEARERS OF THE BLACK STAFF is a fantasy novel about the survivors of the Great Wars. Having been protected by a barrier from the outside world (a decayed, post-apocalyptic wilderness) for 500 years, their somewhat peaceful existence is thrown into disarray when faced with the fact that their protective barrier is failing. Almost immediately, outside invaders appear with the desire to conquer their hospitable lands. Instead of being allies (after 500 years of hanging out together), the races living in the barrier have become mostly distant and isolated from each other. Also, factions have grown, eager to rule the others through the creation of a pseudo-religion based on the one that delivered them from destruction 500 years earlier. Somehow, with the help of a few would-be heroes and a (for lack of a better word) sorcerer... the survivors must find a way to circumvent their problems to continue their survival in earnest. Political intrigue... machinations... treachery... friendship... budding romance... the fantastic... this story has it all.
I highly recommend this book. I enjoyed the heck out of it.

Bearers of the Black Staff (Legends of Shannara) Overview
For more than three decades, New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks has ruled the epic fantasy realm with his legendary Shannara series. With each new novel the mythos has deepened, ever more fascinating characters have arisen, and increasingly breathtaking vistas of magical adventure have emerged. Now the evolution of one of imaginative fiction’s most beloved worlds continues in the first book of the new series Legends of Shannara: Bearers of the Black Staff.
Five hundred years have passed since the devastating demon-led war that tore apart the United States, leaving nothing but scorched and poisoned ruins, and nearly exterminating humankind. Those who escaped the carnage and blight were led to sanctuary by the boy savior known as the Hawk—the gypsy morph. In an idyllic valley, its borders warded by powerful magic against the horrors beyond, humans, elves, and mutants alike found a place they believed would be their home forever.
But after five centuries, the unimaginable has come to pass: The cocoon of protective magic surrounding the valley has vanished. When Sider Ament, the only surviving descendant of the Knights of the Word, detects unknown predators stalking the valley, he fears the worst. And when Panterra Qu and Prue Liss, expert Trackers from the human village of Glensk Wood, find two of their own gruesomely killed, there can be no doubt: The once safe haven of generations has been laid bare and made vulnerable to whatever still lurks in the wasteland of the outside world.
Together, Ament, the two young Trackers, and a daring Elf princess race to spread word of the encroaching danger—and spearhead plans to defend their ancestral home. But suspicion and hostility among their countrymen threaten to doom their efforts from within—while beyond the breached borders, a ruthless Troll army masses for invasion. And in the thick of it all, the last wielder of the black staff and its awesome magic must find a successor to carry on the fight against the cresting new wave of evil.

What happend? - C. Stolle -
All I can say is "What happened!"
Far from all the great books he's written.
If you've been a fan and read all his work, then you know this book has been a complete let down.
Bland characters, redundant dialog, and a monotonous feel to the book.
Man, ....."What happened?"
Bearers of the Black Staff - Sindiya Darman -
Terry Brooks is an amazing storyteller. I have loved his works since I was 14. I fall in love with his works with every new book. I thought Bearers of the Black Staff was his best work yet, because of the timely, prolific, symbolism of the work.
Brooks says the "Most don't live like you and I. They are part of a larger community of family and friends and fellow, and a wide range of considerations governing their actions. They are more concerned about not doing the the wrong thing than doing the right. They take their time because they are afraid of making mistakes that will undo them."
The people of the valley of symbolize the American people who are in the end of an era of prosperity. Who refuse to acknowledge what is happening and believe in the the dream of security. The dream of 500 years of security. Now the barrier is gone and the outside world full of monsters is coming into not only the valley but into your home. Everyone must prepare for a new future.
A novel that is a classic literature novel. Brooks does it again.

If you're already a fan of Terry Brooks' Shannara series, you won't be disappointed. It's an easy, relaxing read with colorful characters and a fun setting. Very enjoyable!

Review Trading from Your Gut: How to Use Right Brain Instinct & Left Brain Smarts to Become a Master Trader
Curtis Faith has an interesting writing voice, particularly for a trading book author.
There's none of the loudmouth, faux-streetwise braggadocio that makes you want to
throw some trading books against a wall (or through a TV screen).
(Disclosure: I worked around Wall Street in the 80's, hung out in bars with the likes of these guys and generally found them to be as obnoxious then in their twenties as many of them still seem to be now in their fifties.)
In refreshing contrast, Curtis Faith uses jarringly simple and direct language in a prose style that reads so relaxed you might start to wonder if he's some kind of naïve trading savant or a satori-infused Zen monk of the markets. Rest assured Faith has the rational/analytical side of trading covered; what he's presenting to us is his personal viewpoint informed by the ups and downs of life since his early success as a Turtle.
In "Trading From Your Gut", Faith applies the popular Right/Left Brain metaphor to what he regards as the yin and yang approaches of a large majority of traders. The left-brainers are the quants, the technicians who tend to be either strict followers of one or more trading systems, or are certain that any trade they make can be justified by analysis. On the right side are the intuitive traders who are all about feel, emotion, and the psychology of the market - on the surface the very antithesis of the quant worldview, but Faith suggests there's plenty of common ground to be cultivated.
With a title "Trading From Your Gut", Faith is obviously focusing on readers who lean toward an analytical, technical approach and could use some loosening up of their intuitive side.
As an aside, I first encountered the Right/Left Brain metaphor in Betty Edwards' classic, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" - still in my opinion one of the most effectively organized instructional books I've ever read on any subject (there's a review for you).
I've also read that over the years aspects of Roger Sperry's initial brain research have been challenged and it's now fairly well-established that - yes - there certainly are different areas of the brain that handle different functions but - no - they're not quite so cleanly and discretely partitioned into hemispheres and they don't perform quite so independently as first thought.
Regardless, Right/Left Brain is a vivid metaphor that's ingrained in our culture and there's little popular itching to replace it.
Having read Faith's previous book, "Way of the Turtle", I found it hard at first to regard him was anything but a dyed-in-the-wool left-brainer. In "Trading From Your Gut" however, he claims upfront that he was always of both minds - rational and intuitive - as was his Turtle mentor Richard Dennis.
Faith also displays an admirable humility by admitting 1) the methods he used to great success as a Turtle - primarily trend-following breakouts - don't work as well anymore (presumably because so many institutional traders incorporate the strategy into their programs and systems). 2) Rather than claiming like others to have found the Holy Grail of Trading Approaches, his own decision-making continues to evolve as it embraces over time even more of an intuitive approach.
Instead of applying his insights to a wide variety of trading methods, Faith selects a single, popular strategy, swing trading, and demonstrates how a "whole-brain informed" trader might approach it combining both intuitive and analytical tools. He chooses swing trading because the days-to-weeks time frame of an average trade provides sufficient opportunity for practice. And he believes practicing decision making with real money on the line is ultimately the only way to become truly comfortable doing it.
A major point of the book is that to benefit from intuitive insight traders (and decision makers in general) have to reduce the fear and anxiety they often feel over the decision making process. Using fast-paced day trading to illustrate would likely have been inappropriate for most readers - including myself. (Although someone attuned and comfortable with the pace of day trading would certainly benefit from what Faith has to say.)
Faith's right brain techniques include focusing on patterns in charts rather than the numbers they represent to develop a faster, more efficient way to sift for trading opportunities. At first glance this doesn't appear to be a particularly original idea, with pattern matching tools now standard on most broker websites. But Faith's point is that relying superficially on something such as patterns is just as limiting - and potentially risky - as being constrained by an overly analytical approach. The two sides must reinforce and continually nourish one another.
The final few pages of the book, ironically the afterword, really ties together Faith's strongest points effectively - so much so that I wish he'd presented similar thoughts much earlier in the text. Here Faith discusses techniques to reduce the fear and uncertainty that keep many people from trusting their intuition and clinging instead to an oftentimes false sense of security in hard facts and numbers.
As hinted at above, I have to say a weakness of the book is the overall organization of the material.
Even preface-writer Van Tharp indicated he glossed over the early chapters on well-known examples of Behavioral Finance due to his own background in psychology. Frankly a lot of this will be very familiar to anyone who regularly reads books or articles on money management and investing. I felt a lot of it wasn't essential to Faith's argument and could have been omitted or shortened.
While weighing in at barely 200 pages, the book took an unusually long time to read because the focus drifted between different aspects and examples of intuitive thinking. Perhaps this was inevitable with such a topic. But however interesting the various and sometimes lengthy digressions into brain functioning, grand prix racing, chess, and skydiving were, their ultimate purpose didn't materialize effectively until the end of the book. I got it by the time I reached the end; I just couldn't help at times wishing the book came with its own GPS.
Another small criticism is the use throughout of extracted highlight quotes before they actually appear in the text - often immediately before. I don't know whether the author or editor is the culprit here, but it's a bizarre practice in a book and really gunks up the prose rhythm. If you want to extract quotes for reinforcement, in my opinion, do it after they've appeared at least once.
One last small turn-off for me was being treated to a sneak peek of the next installment in Curtis Faith's "Art of the Trade" trilogy, namely a preview of the author's next book on trading FOREX. Perhaps I'm too much the purist but this kind of promotion at the end always detracts from the experience I've just had and feels like the literary equivalent of a telemarketing call after dinner.
The above criticisms aside, there's clearly good stuff to be found in "Trading From Your Gut": valuable lessons that go far beyond trading, particularly for those who over-analyze decisions to the point of paralysis and are forever hesitant to go against "what the numbers say".
Faith's key point is that rational/intuitive is not an if/else dichotomy. The rational inevitably informs the intuitive, as does the opposite. The more you understand the analytical side of what you're dealing with the more informed your intuitive hunches will be. That's as true of the jazz musician as it is of the athlete as it is of the trader.
"Trading From Your Gut" is a calmly-paced meditation on the author's continually evolving attitude towards decision-making - not just for trading but in all aspects of life.
It's worth a patient and thoughtful read.

Unique book on trading. - Bron - Mechanicsville, VA USA
This is a hard book to review. First, let me say right off, this is one of the best books on trading I have ever read. For me. The question is, is it for you? The reason I say this is that I feel if you are new to trading, or are more of an "investor" (long term style trader) it may not be as good for you. It would all depend on your experiences and background, I think, and how open you are to the ideas presented.
In my fairly long trading career, I've paid my dues and struggled as most do. Made a lot, lost a lot, typical story. I took a few years off from trading and worked on my 'system' and thought about what was going right and wrong for me. Gradually, I eased back in to trading. But I went about things in a very different way. I discounted everything I had read and thought about trading and decided to do it "my way." I set my "system" aside and just traded. I simplified my approach and I trusted my instincts and intuition more. And, bingo! For me, it started to work better than ever before.
Good news, but exactly why and how was this so? I thought about that a lot, but it wasn't until I read this book that I knew the answer. It was because I was now trading using both logic and intuition, in a holistic fashion, and not crippled by over reliance on my left-brain "system." And all that stuff I had "discounted" was stuff I had learned and absorbed and was still there to draw on. Like a baseball player who does not "think" about how to hit the ball, but just does it, I was not over-thinking my trading, I was just "doing it" putting all my hard won knowledge and skills to work and using my right-brain to put it all together and call the shots. (Well, it's hard to explain, but hopefully this gives you the gist. If it sounds like I'm a "hippie" trader...LOL..well, not so. Without the hard work, training and practice, it won't work. Can't just "be" there. You have to do the work.)
But will this book open this door for you? Possibly. But I think you will have to be "ready" and receptive. (So if you buy it and don't "get it" at first, keep it handy on your shelf. It may hit you differently later.)
The author, after a basic introduction to fundamental technical analysis and trading, explains in a friendly and easily understood way, how we use our left brain and right brain in daily life and why both are important to our survival and decision making. And he details how we train ourselves through play and practice with the skills we need. Skills that the right brain can then bring to bear with its unique pattern matching and gestalt style processes. For me, this was a revelation and I suddenly understood what I had been through and why it was working for me. This is important, because this understanding gives one confidence and trust in ones methods.
The book is easy to read and understand and I learned a lot of interesting things about how we think and make decisions. Fascinating stuff. Lots of entertaining anecdotes as examples. The book is not that long, but there is a lot of substance contained in it. Many very useful nuggets of trading wisdom sprinkled throughout. I think the book could have used a few more actual trading examples illustrating how the right brain can take the left-brain knowledge and apply it in "fuzzy" situations, perhaps, but it's all there. The sincere desire of the author to help comes through as well. All in all, a great book if you are ready for it.
As trading books go, it's very reasonably priced and I recommend it highly to anyone who is an active trader.
A Strong Two Sided Method of Trading - C. Oliver - Worcester, MASSACHUSETTS United States
Trading From Your Gut is Curtis Faith's newest book. Curtis Faith was one of Richard Denis's turtles, and has made millions in the stock market. I have the hope of one day making millions as well in the market and so I figured I'd give this book a read. It was a very interesting, unique, and informative read, though it's not ever going to be the last book you ever read. It's sound principles consist of removing your emotions from the market and don't fight the market.
Other books I would reccomend are,
How To Trade In Stocks by Jesse Livermore
Trend Following by Michael Covel
William O'Neil books
The Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham
Nicolas Darvas Books
Trend Trading for a Living by Thomas K. Carr (THIS ONE IS ONE OF THE MORE IMPORTANT ONES I DO BELIEVE)
These books have helped me turn a small pitance of 5,000 dollars into over 150 thousand dollars in the markets in the last year and a half. This book was a great contribution to my library and would be for yours as well.
Best investment book I've read in the past 3 years - Avid reader - CO United States
For me, this book was so good that I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I am a left-brained, systematic trader type, I have read his "Way of the Turtle" book as well as Michael Covel's "Trend Following" and "The Complete Turtle Trader" books, and have gone so far to have written several programs that show me that the Turtle trading rules still work great for stocks, ETF's and Mutual Funds.
In fact, I probably spent time working on my programs just to avoid looking at the charts, since I had always found them "noisy", pushing me into information overload and only getting through the first few charts on the watchlist. When it comes time to entering or exiting my systematic program trades, I found I still had a hard time pulling the trigger.
During this time, I have come to recognize a few indicators that actually do very well at telling me when the investment is bottoming, topping or beginning to trend, and actually would have gotten me into the same trades that my program would have entered, but often with better entries and exits.
This book was a major breakthrough for me in recognizing that I have been blocking my right brain from wanting to help me do the right thing and protect me from danger and loss. I now recognize that my right brain (intuition) and left brain (systematic program trading) must be aligned and working together to make my trading most effective.
I now to get through large watchlists in a short amount of time by looking for just a few patterns that my intuition has told me (and I've proven through enough left-brain studies) to work well. My mental chatter has dropped off considerably, my stress level has dropped and I really feel like my whole-brain is now working together rather than in conflict.
If you are looking for a trading system or specific rules to use to become a better trader, check out the books mentioned above. This book is really focused on "getting your mind right" by recognizing that your right brain and left brain have complementary roles to play in investment decisions, and that the master traders have succeeded in aligning both and use their whole brain effectively.
If you feel like you've got a solid trading methodology but still can't pull the trigger - something is holding you back from taking action, read this book! If you feel stressed while trading, it's likely to be right brain/left brain misalignment that's at the root of the problem. This book will help you recognize some of the signs of this misalignment, how to use each half of the brain for what it does best, and exercises on how to actually develop and strengthen the coordination of both halves into an effective "whole brain" approach to trading.
Excellent book, Curtis!

Review Rorey's Secret (Country Road Chronicles #1)
Rorey's Secret (Country Road Chronicles #1) Best Review
After the fire almost destroyed all they had, the Hammonds and the Worthams pulled through with the help pf each other. At night a fire broke out at the Hammond's farm. The Samuel and Robert Wortham rushed to help out. In an attempt to save his animals, one of the Hammond boys ran into the barn. Samuel ran in after him and managed to save his life, but not with out almost killing himself. After managing to put the fire out the whole family of Hammonds plus the others went over to the Wortham's house to house for the night. Rorey Hammond, who actually started the fire with her not supposed to be boyfriend by knocking over a lantern while dancing, blamed Franky, her older brother who wasn't very bright, because her boyfriend, Lester Turrey, said to. As a result, everyone believed Rorey until Sarah told the family about Rorey's secret plans with Lester Turrey. Meanwhile, Samuel wasn't getting better because he suffered from a head concussion, a huge gash in his foot, and possibly broken ribs. In the end everything works for the good and Samuel is fun in no time and the Hammond family pulled together even closer. Rorey's Secret was an exceptional book and worth the read.
On reason why this book was so good was because it was very emotional. Some examples from the book are when, one, Franky's dad always got mad at him for no reason and would punish him unfairly and yell at him constantly. Two, Sarah yelled at Rorey until she confessed it was her that started the fire. This was emotional because Sarah and Rorey had been friends for seven years and know Sarah had to set things straight. Three, in the end of the book Samuel's mother, who had a bad reputation of being a drunk, came to visit the family for the first time.
Another reason was because the book was full of suspense. One example was when Samuel ran into the barn and came out unconscious and Julia Wortham, his wife, was extremely worried. Another was when Rorey miss treated her brother, Franky, after he followed her to one of her meetings with Lester by placing the blame on him for the fire. The last example was when Rorey and Mr. Hammond didn't talk to or come over to the Wortham's even though all his kids were there.
The last reason why this book was so good was because it had interesting characters that told the story from their point of view. One of those characters was Julia Wortham. She was a worried wife and a good hostest. In the book the thing that makes the most interesting was when had over 20 people at her house and they all need special attention. She managed to see to it all but she got next to nothing in hours of sleep and got up the next day ready to the same thing. The other character was Sarah Wortham, Julia's daughter. She was the only one besides her mom who believed him when he said he didn't start the fire, Because Sarah had inside information, she was the one who figured out that Rorey started the fire. The last character is Franky Hammond; the kid who everyone believed started the fire. He was a boy who dropped out of school on account of that he had trouble reading and doing math and other things. He worked with Samuel and was taught by Julia, who was like his second mother. Because he had the learning disability, everyone didn't like him and blamed all their trouble on him.
The most important reason why I liked this book was because it was very moving. It was moving to the fact that God could pull all of them through something like that and end in a good note. One reason why was so moving was because everyone had already been through one crisis and hadn't completely gotten through it when they had the fire. Another reason was because Samuel's mother came back to apologize for the way she acted from when he was little and turned her life to the Lord. I recommend this book in the highest regards.

historical christian novel that works - Lori Ann - China
I was really surprised that I liked this book so much. For one, I'd never heard of the author or her other books, and since I got it free for the Kindle, I wasn't expecting much (I wasn't impressed by my previous "free limited time promotional offer" read). Secondly, I'm not a huge fan of the Christian novel genre: too many seem corny, contrived, and all too predictable.
Despite my preconceptions, I really did enjoy this book. The first thing the novel had going for it in my mind was its setting in a historical time period; I do really enjoy historical fiction. Beyond that though, it's just an easy novel to get caught up in. Characters were not cheesily Christian and too-perfect; they were more real than that, messing up, even knowing it, but still struggling to have faith in the belief they proclaimed. I liked how the narrators shifted, as it threw in some unpredictability (especially since the title character Rorey wasn't a narrator until later in the novel, when her secret was already revealed), but my favorite was Juli, who I connected with completely both in her faith and in her struggle to walk in it, trusting completely amidst such stressful circumstances. At first I was a bit lost with the sheer number of important characters, but it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the book: so many twists and turns were possible with so many ages, personalities, and the interactions between them all.
I give it five stars, but will share my one bit of "constructive criticism": the last chapter did seem to wrap things up a bit too quickly. Since it's #1 in a series, I would have preferred it leaving things at a bit of a cliffhanger (which also would have encouraged me to seek out and buy #2 ;-D). As it was, I was a bit disappointed to see a book which was otherwise authentic and unpredictable end up with such an uninteresting point-by-point, matter-of-fact "and this happened to Rorey, and this is how Samuel is now, and we wrote letters to Grandma, The End".
All in all though, a great read... especially if you can get it free on Kindle! Smart marketing for the publisher because this author's other books are now going on my wishlist :-D
A good walk in history - E. D. Ames -
I read the entire series and highly recommend it to others. I shared my books with my mother who lived through that era and she said it was well done. Also shared it with my aunt who found it to be a good series. In fact none of us could put the books down until we read them all.
Love Leisha Kelly's style of writing - Jann Williams - Sun City, AZ
It is not often that I write a review but Ms Kelly's books are such a comfortable read. I love her style and rarely see it in other books. I found her quite by accident in a used book store. After reading the book I quickly went to [...] and ordered all of her books. I am just about to begin my last one "Rachel's Prayers". None has been anything but a wonderful read. Following the Wortham's & Hammond's families has been interesting. Watching the kids grow older in each book, following them through many trials and tribulations. Ms Kelly has a great way of allowing us to see into their lives and how they deal with life in general. Julia and Samuel are wonderful people and she makes them come alive for the reader. When a writer has that ability, they have my interest. I look forward to many more wonderful books from Ms Kelly.

Samuel has decided hes lived to long and there is nothing left to live for. After an attempted suicide Samuel is left with his wolf in control. That the wolf is in control instead of the man is bad enough, but if his dad the the like the alpha of all alphas finds out he will be forced to terminate Samuel. And to top it all off Adams tribe had not been right since Adam brought Mercy in, and there is disloyalty brewing among the pack and if some one doesn't do something there could be a huge problem.Mercy will need to except her part in Adams life and pack to survive this and help everyone else stay alive also.
I liked this book alot. This is a great series. I love Mercy she is so strong and independent and stubborn i love it. Adam is the mega alpha male. Handsome, loving overprotective, strong and in control and never stops till he gets what he wants. Samuel is loving , smart , soft spoken but you know he has more power than any of the wolfs including Adam.
I think the ending seemed a little rushed and easy but over all the book was a great success. If you have not checked out this series yet you should its a good one.

Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, Book 5) Overview
All-new action in the #1 New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series
When mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson attempts to return a powerful Fae book she'd previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.
It seems the book contains secret knowledge-and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side-leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam's life forfeit.
All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn't careful, she might not have many more to live...

Not much from the characters - A. Horton - Seattle, WA USA
I've enjoyed the series, but was fairly underwhelmed by this book. The plot and action were generally fine (although the ending felt sudden, with an unhealthy dose of deus ex machina) but the characters felt flat and one dimensional. Mercy, for instance, other than periodic expressions of romance-esque passion for Adam (which felt more like an animal in heat than real attraction) just sort of hovered around blithe annoyance. Ditched by someone she did a lot of favors for, she accepts it with a shrug. Betrayed by a pack member? Mild irritation. Even tortured, she seems basically nonchalant about the situation. Just felt like Briggs wrote a plot without paying much attention to the characters in it.
No Mercy for Mercy - Nancy Braun - Kokomo, IN United States
In this next book in the series, Mercy rocks a series of conflicts and proves herself out as a strong heroine and an interesting character with depth.
This is not a stand alone book, and you will want to read it in the context of the rest of the series. Sexy, fun this is an entertaining ride.
Silver Borne - Shifter fan -
If you are a fan of the paranormal, then this book is for you. Patricia Briggs brings the characters to life and makes you wish you lived next door to them. Mercy is a coyote and the big bad alpha wolf is her boyfriend. She is a brave, independent and strong woman with a femine side that does not get the way of getting the job done. She has ties to the Fae world through Zee which is the Fae who sold her her shop as well as vampire ties. I like Mercy and though I'm no good at reviews I felt compelled to write this one because I like the series so much.

Review Definitely Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 6)
Definitely Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 6) Best Review
Charlaine develops the world of Sookie Stackhouse quite nicely with this book, especially the idea of good witches with powers more akin to Samantha, and the idea of backstabbing political intrigue with the mystery regarding the death of Sookie's cousin Hadley. The whole of the story revolves around the Queen of Louisiana and her marriage to the King of Mississippi, and the former were turned vamp who shows up in typical Sookie fashion in a closet!
Another developmental idea is the idea of Sookie using her powers for good. Not only as an excuse to get her into all sorts of vampire functions, like all the books before, but for actual benefit to the community. The idea of this is so obvious, but for some reason has never occured to me before reading about that in this book. Now some caveats are learned about this activity in the next book, so please relish this little vignette and enjoy it, because it might not happen much in the future.
On the romance side, Eric forces some serious disallusionment with Bill by revealing his secret life as the Queen's spy, and Quinn really finds himself helpless to take the edge off that shocker. Other than that, the romance in this book is slow, and a bit tedious in her pursuit of a guy which we know she wont wind up with in the end. But, if you exercise your patience, you'll stop and notice that Quinn seems nice, and is a refreshing change of pace from Sookie's past beaus.
The action and the mystery combine at the end, as key plot elements come together, and mysteries are solved in the aftermath. People who crave vampire/were blood soaked action will find this story right up their alley, as swords chop chop chop up unwilling victims left and right. I feel like beheading certainly qualifies as the title inspiration of definitely dead.
Emotionally, this book is great. You really feel great depths of despair at Bill's shocking revelation, and a parade of others as this story takes you on unexpcted twists and turns. If there was anything missing it was that true love mushy mushy type stuff which really has been absent since book 1 now that I think about it.
This is a very good book, regardless what others have said. I believe someone said that Sookie wouldn't like 'The Prouducers' which could be realistic since she was going on a date and didn't really get to pick what show she would watch. Charlaine has never been shy about using real world business establishments like Ralph and Kacoo's, and Walmart and apparently is not worried about using real world shows which will date the books. I've always enjoyed the fact that the events in these books supposedly occur just before they are published which leaves them hopelessly dated. I mean, Sookie doesn't have a cell phone for several books...and isn't really keeping up with the information age anyway.
Recommended.

The new Sookie Stackhouse novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Dead as a Doornail.
Spiked with a "frothy fusion of romance, mystery, and fantasy" (Publishers Weekly), this "deliciously fiendish...increasingly riotous series" (Dallas Morning News) sends the supernaturally gifted cocktail waitress to New Orleans, where she has to deal with the legacy of one of her own family and a host of potentially dangerous characters.

Time to Move the Story Forward - Rebekkah - Utah & Hawaii
While some reviewers found book six slow, I thought the story in book six introduced new characters and situations that are obviously going to set up books down the line. Because I'm not always into long, drawn-out mysteries, I actually enjoyed this novel for its straight-forward action and plot development. Yes, there were still mysterious actions going on in the story, but they are answered rather quickly, and only aid in propelling the story on a bit more.
On the whole, I liked the new characters and the direction the series has taken. The story has become even more paranormal than it was before (if possible), and it should be interesting to see where it goes. I can't say that the writing is sparkling (no vampire pun intended), but the story telling is interesting and holds a twist of comedy and drama that feels strange for this type of novel. It's hard not to care about Sookie and her life. Really, I think that while Sookie's strange draw to every man she associates with can be a bit annoying, that you do grow to want to see her safe and happy!
One of my favorite books! - Anna Lee - Oakland,CA
I must admit that until I purchased Club Dead I didn't know very much about Charlaine Harris. After reading Club Dead the third book from the Sookie Stackhouse series I became hooked. Definitely Dead was not only a page turner but an incredible mystery full of depth and humor. I loved every second of this book, so much so that it only took me a day and the half to read. Charlaine Harris has a gift for combining mystery, erotica, and humor. Her understanding and emotional development of the characters makes it easy for (me) the reader to follow along to. The story was so engrossing and fun that I found, I lost myself with each page. I loved Ann Rice tell the day she retired and found it difficult to find another author of her genre that I could really get into until I discovered, Charlaine Harris. I can now say I've found an author with a series of books I can look forward to reading. Reading has never been so fun.

Review Voyager (Outlander)
Voyager (Outlander) Best Review
This, like Dragonfly in Amber the second book, was fantastic. It continued a great storyline and provided plenty of action and adventure, and that ever steady romance between Jamie and Claire.
A larger book, it covers quite a bit of ground in the story of Jamie and Claire's relationship. It starts where Dragonfly in Amber leaves off, with Claire still in the 20th century with her daughter Brianna. They are searching through the history books to see what became of Jamie Fraser, Claire's husband from the 18th century. When at last they find him, Claire must make the decision on whether she will go back in time to seek him out, or stay in the present with her daughter.
Persuaded by her daughter to go to him. She prepares for her journey back in time and once again steps through the stones. Back in the past, she rather quickly finds Jamie and starts on a whole series of misfortunes and adventures starting with the burning down of Jamie's print shop and an unsuccessful smuggling attempt to bring in alcohol. Forced to flee the city, they return to Jamie's home in Lallybroch.
Lallybroch isn't too peaceful however, as Claire learns that in her 20 year absence, Jamie has married again. And not only has he married, but it was to a woman who tried to kill her in the first book. A settlement is reached and Jamie, not having the funds to pay off Laoghaire (the 2nd wife) takes his young nephew to obtain some jewels that are buried off the coast. However, before his nephew Ian can get back to them, he is abducted by pirates.
Because of this, and a promise to Jamie's sister to keep her son safe, they head for the Caribbean. Beset by the British Navy and many other foes, reaching the Caribbean is not easy for them and they are separated numerous times along the way. When they finally reach the islands it still stays dangerous in their quest to save Ian.
Like the other books, this one is mainly written from Claire's point of view. It retains the rich descriptions and wordiness that Gabaldon is known for but the length of the book does not detract from the enjoyability of it.
My only complaint would be that we are reintroduced to a character that was presumably dead in the first novel, but has come back and changed drastically. While Gabaldon gives a plausible explanation to this change, it still seems out of place and a bit unbelievable.
The 3rd book in the series, Voyager, is a great read. However, the first two books should be read before it; this is not a stand-alone read.

Voyager (Outlander) Overview
In this rich, vibrant tale, Diana Gabaldon continues the story of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser that began with the now-classic novel Outlander and continued in Dragonfly in Amber. Sweeping us from the battlefields of eighteenth-century Scotland to the exotic West Indies, Diana Gabaldon weaves magic once again in an exhilarating and utterly unforgettable novel....
Their love affair happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her ... and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.
When she discovers that Jamie may have survived, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face what awaits her ... the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland ... and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that lies beyond the standing stones.

So sad.... - E. Holmes - Alabama, USA
Outlander is my all-time favorite book. I am so sad that the subsequent books seem to get wosre with each each edition. I will have to stop with this one, but I grieve that I will never get to read the great series this could have been.
Awsome read - Jan M. Lorrain - Coppell, TX, US
I loved this book. This is actually the third one, of a so far eight part series, telling the story of Claire and Jamie. Some time ago I started with Drums of Autumn, then ran across A Breath of Snow and Ashes and realized that I wanted to start at the begining. So I ordered all the books that I have not read. I am so glad I did. This is a marvelous story with a lot of history thrown in the mix. I have become very fond of the leading characters who are very human. Amazon has it listed under Romance novels, but I don't think that is a good place for the series. I think more folks would read the books if they were under Historical Fiction.

The ISBN Helps You Get Your Desired Book Without Much Hassle
The ISBN or the International Standard Book Number is a bar code used by retailers and libraries for cataloging a book and tracking its inventory. The ISBN number gives accurate information about the book's title, language of publication and the publisher. It can be said to be a book's DNA.
There are about one hundred and sixty agencies around the globe, which assign these numbers to publishers in blocks. The publisher has to make a projection of the number of books that he will be publishing over a period of five years. The ISBN code, thus obtained can be used for any title published by their company.
An ISBN search reveals information about the language or group identifier, as they are usually known. This is followed by the publisher code. Next follows a code, which indicates the title of the book. Usually, this code is assigned by the publishers themselves and then registered with the agency. Newer editions are given different codes, which makes identification of such books easier.
You can search by ISBN to find a book of your choice. Online card category available with most libraries help customers to search for books using the ten or thirteen digit code. Students can search for recommended editions of books using textbooks ISBN code. However, it is important to use each number in the code correctly to get the right information. College books have different editions and authors. Textbook ISBN is a handy tool for college students as it ensures that they get the right course book.
The ISBN procedure may seem complex, but the complexity is what guarantees its effectiveness. While more than fifty thousand titles are published in the US alone, every year, ISBN edition helps readers search for any book quite easily. These books can be identified and cataloged anywhere in the world.

Rave Book Reviews? How Important Are Reviews?
A great book review can make or break the chances for success of a new book, especially if the author is relatively unknown. When the publisher of the Malia and Teacup series, Barringer Publishing approached a county librarian to order the Malia and Teacup series for the children's library, the main librarian stated that she only orders books based on reviews.
But here is the catch. The majority of reviewers have two very large hurdles for new authors. Many of the larger review publications do not want to see a POD (print on demand) book and/or they want to see the manuscript, not a book, three to four months before you are published. Once you are published they will not even look at your book - even if it is a terrific book. Barnes and Noble has its own gate-keeping procedure. A title must be approved by the Small Print department. Most books can be entered into the Barnes and Noble database and purchased on line, but almost no store will purchase the book for the shelves if you are listed as a POD book. The only way around this is to create huge demand for your book before they will consider placing your book on the shelves.
Amazon and many of the large chain bookstores allow you to upload reviews onto your book's page. According to reports, reviews make the biggest difference in a a purchasing decision. Search the web for reviews of books that are similar to your book and contact the authors of the reviews to see if they will consider reading your book. Be sure to sell your book's unique features to the reviewers and be very, very nice to them. Be prepared to wait months without any feedback and do not annoy them with multiple inquires. Google your book frequently and treasure the reviews that you do receive. Use any positive review as a mailer or e-mail blast to create a little buzz about your book.
The Children's Christian Book Review recommended the Malia and Teacup series as Very Good and Phil Jason of Florida Weekly Magazine said the Malia and Teacup books "are the kinds of books that parents and teachers, as well as kids, have been seeking." These kinds of rave reviews become the stepping stones to reach more children's book reviewers. Be sure to send a thank you and accurately cite the reviewer's words.

Book Club Scams
The very open nature of the Internet has made some people vulnerable to unscrupulous parties who engage in illegal activities aimed at fooling people out of their hard-earned money. Some of the scams that have been perpetrated on the Internet include pyramid schemes and investments in nonexistent companies.
Before you conduct any financial transactions over the Internet, it is important that you verify all the information provided to you. Book clubs are especially controversial since members are asked to pay a fee before they receive their books. Some organizations that form fake book clubs do so to trick people into giving out their credit card information.
An example
One way of using book clubs to fool people is by offering virtual versions of books to those who are not aware that electronic books are not allowed by authors.
Most of the time, those behind the scam will entice potential members with electronic books that have not come out in the market yet. They usually say that they have manuscripts of the books in soft copy and are willing to sell them so you can read the book before others do. However, their sole purpose is to get your credit card information. Once they get enough credit card information, those maintaining the site can easily close shop.
What to do
If you find yourself being enticed in this way, it would be a good idea to go to the authorities. One of the agencies where you can go ask help from is the securities commission. You can have the authorities verify the company's operations and conduct arrests if it is proven that it is involved in such scams. It is also a good idea to check the validity of the claims of any Internet-based company before you purchase anything online.

Dorm Ideas - Decorating and Setup
It is time for you to decorate your new pad to your heart's content, so what style will you go for? What screams you more than anything? Let me throw a few cheap and easy ideas out there for you, just to help give you an idea.
Theme: You can try to go for a theme, whether it is a color theme or a style, and build on it. If you want to go for colors, write down your top choices, and put those colors together and make sure they go together (and your roommate doesn't mind). Painting my not be the way to go with these colors, especially since most dorms do not allow painting, but it is perfect for chair and couch covers, blanket wall coverings, paintings or artistic posters, and rugs.
Movie Décor: Another fun and easy way to decorate, as long as you are a movie fan, is putting up movie décor and memorabilia. You can purchase posters of movies and film stars, film cells, photos, and even cardboard cutouts of your favorite celebrity (if you are that much of a geek) and just go wild. Decorating this way is one of the fastest and easiest ways to decorate dorms and bedrooms, and is a cheaper way to go. If you want to make sure everything looks and stays in good condition, grab a frame for your photos and posters.
Art Décor: If you are a fan of art and the classics, show them off! Art can be a little steep in price to purchase, unless you happen to have a talent in art and design and can create your own. You can always find most of the famous artists and there work on a poster as well, and look great with an accenting frame. If you transfer some art you had already had in your room, be careful and take heed; things in dorms tend to get wrecked and broken, no matter how careful you may be, so if there is anything too precious to you, you may want to leave it home.
Rockstar Décor: For all you music lovers, show your favorites loud and proud! Posters, CD covers (preferably signed), confetti from the last concert, stained t-shirt from the AC/DC concert, sweat and spit from... you get the idea. Music lovers can be freaks, especially the rockstars! Remember to mind the roommate.
Not sure where to start searching for dorm décor? Don't worry, we've done your homework for you! We're nice guys :). Head over to Movie Merch to get the run down on the best places to start looking for classy movie memorabilia to decorate your dorm with.

Shutter Island / Shutter Island (MTI) (Spanish Edition) Best Review
DL sets a wonderfully imaginative (sinister, brooding) scene in SI. The writing is fast-paced; the characters well-drawn; the story interesting throughout. That said, the reader knows to expect some great twist in due course. And whatever certain book-jacket critics may say about having been blown away when it was revealed to them, I find it hard to believe they really were. All roads lead, pretty early on, to one likely shocking ending for SL, and the likeliest shock is the shock you get. It's a credit to DL's gift for storytelling that this reader, at least, did not feel cheated for having predicted the ending of this entertaining novel long before it got there. My guess is most readers have done the same. I can't give LS 5 stars, but I enthusiastically give it 4.

A great thriller - mcryan -
If you are looking for a fast paced, perfectly executed, and suspensful thriller, then this is the book for you. Lehane shares a certain similarity to Harlan Coben but it is a more subtle likeness so if you like Coben, you may very well like Lehane too. The ending is not so much as a shocking revelation that the reader doesn't see coming but rather a slow, meticulous unraveling so that the end reads with much the same satisfaction as putting in those last few pieces of a challenging jigsaw puzzle. The book reads incredibly fast and is so completely enjoyable. Watching the movie directly after finishing the book is highly recommended.
Sure to leave you shuttering - Heather - Wahington
This book will grab you from the opening chapter and ceases to release even after the cover is closed. As you travel with Teddy through the asylum you soon find there is more than meets the eye. The place holds a multitude of secrets, each terrifying and the twists just keep turning. There is no telling what will happen next yet each event falls perfectly into place leading to the ultimate climax.
Shutter Island is well-written, it's beautiful words at odds with the horrific story line yet somehow resulting in balanced tale. This book is impossible to predict and equally as difficult to put down. It will have you reading into the wee hours...just be sure to leave all the lights on. I can only imagine how terrifying the movie must be.

Summary:
Jonathan Blow's Braid received high acclaim on its release, and is currently one of the most purchased downloadable games to date. Braid is essentially a 2D puzzle platformer dealing mainly with stomping on enemy heads (which are more for puzzle solving than obstacles) and time manipulation. There is a degree of interpretation regarding Braid's plot - at its most basic, it follows the

So I just finished Skate 3, and the the first thing I noticed is that it resembled more of Skate 1 then 2 did, even though 2 was in the same city and was more or less a rehash of 1. Skate 3 is what 2 should have been and reassures my faith in the franchise again. There is something therapeutic about just free skating around and grinding on stuff. It takes me back to the good ol' days when Tony
Sell Back Textbooks
Students sell back textbooks after every semester. But they make many mistakes and could get hundreds more for their used textbooks. The most popular option to sell textbooks is to go back to the campus bookstore. The problem with the campus bookstore is that they only give students pennies on the dollar for their textbooks. Then the campus bookstore re-sells the textbook at double the price.
When you sell back textbooks you need to check online and see what your textbook is going for. You could also post your book on a cork board to sell directly to students. All you have to do is find out what the bookstore is selling for and reduce your price by a couple of dollars. This will almost guarantee you will sell your textbooks and get much more for them rather then selling back to the bookstore.
If you want to sell back textbooks online there are many options. You could list your book for sale on your MySpace page or Facebook. If you friends need your book they will most likely contact you. Also when you sell textbooks online, you have to be aware that their will be shipping charges. So that will cut into your profits.
Here is a list you could use to sell back textbooks:
MySpace
FaceBook
eBay
Amazon
Craigslist
Just keep in mind when you sell back textbooks, you will have to pay a small fee to most of the sites listed above. You best approach would be to see what your campus bookstore is willing to pay for your textbook. Then you should see what your book is going for online. And make a decision from there where you will get the most money when you sell textbooks.
The best way to go through college is to get all your textbooks for free. This would save you thousands of dollars over time. If you would like to know more about getting textbooks for free follow the link below.

How Used Textbook Sales Drive Prices Up
The price of textbooks is enough to make otherwise peaceful and intellectual college students nearly riot. Paying a couple hundred bucks for a basic biology book will do that to you. In response to this problem, many a used textbook service has popped up so students can trade them back and forth and not have to pay retail. Oddly, this actually drives up the cost of new editions.
Let me start off by saying that I've purchased used textbooks and was happy to do so given the price. I also happen to think the textbook pricing system is outrageous, particularly given the fact most college students aren't exactly rolling in dough! The debate over the cost of these textbooks has many sides. The impact of used textbook sales is one that isn't brought up that often, but needs to be considered.
I buy a new textbook for a class. I pay $180 for it. Of this price, the publisher and author are going to get a pretty solid chunk. I take the class, pass it and then sell the book. I sell it for $130. Of this amount, the site I use gets a piece and I get the rest. The publisher and author of the book get nothing. I can already envision you saying "good" rather forcefully and can understand why. While I generally agree with you, it is an important fact to understand because it has a huge economic effect.
What would you do if you were the publisher? You know the first run of textbooks will sell, but that the second run will sell very slowly because everyone is buying up the used version of the first run of textbooks. The answer should be obvious. You are going to charge more for that first run so you can be assured that you will cover the cost of both runs and make a profit. It is basic capitalism!
So, am I going to suggest that we all avoid buying used textbooks or what have you? No, not a chance. I'm merely suggesting that there are a number of reasons new versions costs so much and they aren't all do to evil publishers.

Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter Best Review
Multipliers - How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, by Wiseman & McKeown
This book is a "homerun" for executives wanting to grow their companies by attracting, engaging and challenging smart, ambitious, talented employees. Wiseman's concept of Multipliers and Diminishers provides a great mechanism for getting to the guts of what makes some leaders more successful than others. Having spent many years as an executive - too often as a diminisher - and now consulting day-in-and-day-out with entrepreneurs and private and family business owners, I resonate with her multiplier concept. All too often owners and managers struggle with "letting go" and the creation of a climate where managers and teams are challenged and expected to draw on their own unique genius to solve problems and execute in resourceful, successful ways. This process is complex, requiring both emotional and strategic growth on the part of the executive. "Multipliers" is one of the best reads on this important process. I urge all executives wishing to take their leadership to the next level to purchase this book and begin their own multiplier journey!

Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter Overview
Are you a genius or a genius maker?
We've all had experience with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the ones around them and always need to be the smartest ones in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them. When these leaders walk into a room, lightbulbs go off over people's heads, ideas flow, and problems get solved. These are the leaders who inspire employees to stretch themselves to deliver results that surpass expectations. These are the Multipliers. And the world needs more of them, especially now, when leaders are expected to do more with less.
In this engaging and highly practical book, leadership expert Liz Wiseman and management consultant Greg McKeown explore these two leadership styles, persuasively showing how Multipliers can have a resoundingly positive and profitable effect on organizations—getting more done with fewer resources, developing and attracting talent, and cultivating new ideas and energy to drive organizational change and innovation.
In analyzing data from more than 150 leaders, Wiseman and McKeown have identified five disciplines that distinguish Multipliers from Diminishers. These five disciplines are not based on innate talent; indeed, they are skills and practices that everyone can learn to use—even lifelong and recalcitrant Diminishers. Lively, real-world case studies and practical tips and techniques bring to life each of these principles, showing you how to become a Multiplier too, whether you are a new or an experienced manager. Just imagine what you could accomplish if you could harness all the energy and intelligence around you. Multipliers will show you how.

Game Changing Insight - Robb Crocker - Portland, OR United States
I read a ton of business/leadership/management books, most are "good" some are "great" a few are "game changing" (E-Myth, Effective Executive, Lynchpin). Multipliers fits the "game changing" mold in my humble opinion. I've been leading a handful of different business' as an "accidental diminisher" for over 11 years, with relative success. I've consistently struggled with the concept of getting my team to "own" their responsibilities in their respective organizations. Multipliers has shown me the light, and I can finally understand why I've had such a tough time with building a consistently "responsible" crew. I have a new-found sense of excitement and optimism just knowing that there is a way to get better performances from the "smart" individuals on my team, while at the same time making it more enjoyable for them to perform. Highly recommended!
Great Advise, Entertaining Read - Stefan Schaffer -
This book provides managers with a well-researched foundation on how their behavior impacts not only the morale but also the performance of their teams. A demanding leadership style, characterized by trust, honesty and consistency leads to much better results than micromanaging tyranny. Not completely surprising, but a great confirmation for those who try to be good people and successful managers at the same time. In addition, Multipliers provides a rich set of examples and helpful techniques to make sure that the diminisher inside all of us doesn't bring us off track too often. It's an entertaining read. Not too long and not too brief.
Eye opener - A. P. Aalbersberg - Amsterdam, the Netherlands
This book is a must for managers, for me it was an eye opener, and it will be for you!
