Exclusive news from Jasman Toys on Halo 3 guns.
Jasman Toys recently got in touch with me today, thanking me for the recent reviews that myself and the rest of the crew have done over the past few months. Following the feedback, they informed me of some awesome news that may appeal to those who thought the current models were a little expensive.
"Keep an eye out for our Mass Marketed Plasma Pistols. Set of two for about $40. We are trying to get it placed at WalMart. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the high end version, but it will still light up and sound and play laser tag. Cross your fingers that WalMart picks it up in time for Halo Wars!!!"
This is awesome news! If you remember our Plasma Pistol review, Rick pointed out that it would cost you over a hundred dollars to get a set of pistols to play with a friend or two. Now for about 40 bucks (Roughly twenty a gun.) you can proceed to blast your friends Halo style for a cheaper price! Will the older guns be compatible? I'm sure they will be. Stay tuned for more news as we get it!

Exploding Head Figure for Gears of War
"Sure, we post our share of risky toys, but here's something slightly different. Something without plastic jubblies. Something totally grody. Something like this Gears of War Locust with its head being blown into iddy-bitty pieces. As we previously hinted at, this was spotted at the US Toy Fair. Close-up after the jump, complete with plastic blood squirtage."
I love the attention to detail in this figure. The gun and armor look great but the very best part is the chuck of meat at the very top. It puts this from awesome, to freaking sweet.

Paper Portal Turret!
"In more Portal news, paper Portal turrets FTW! A resurgence of Portal mania has come upon this blogger/writer and what better way to celebrate this by making a paper Portal turret. I hated these damn things in the game, so why not make one out of paper only to someday crush it for sh*ts and giggles. By way of Deviant Art, this creation was devised by billybob884. The download page (in PDF form) for this is located here if you would like to partake in such a thing. Besides, isn’t it about time the companion cube gets to rest for a second out of the limelight?

Im not a big fan of paper (and paper related items) but I can't get enough Portal related things. And I think this looks pretty cool.

The Xbox Collector Video review: Devil May Cry Dante action figure.
Hey folks, I'm proud to present one of the first video reviews for the Xbox Collector! On this video I cover the Revoltech Dante action figure from the game Devil May Cry
N+ Review (Xbox Live Arcade)
If there is one sure fire fact in the world its that Ninjas are the coolest thing since sliced bread, especially if its bread sliced by a ninja. Recently, we've seen many forms of the Ninja from the likes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninja Gaidan, Dead or Alive and even the likes of Shinobi a few years ago; but now there is a new ninja contender and its available for the Xbox Live Arcade. The story of the game is simple, your a ninja and when your not busy flipping out and killing people your searching for gold and thus we bring you the premise for N+. N+ presents the gold for the ninja but the only problem is that the gold is being guarded by every possible element of death and you have a limited time to cash in and escape from tons of rooms of doom.
The game play is very easy to pick up and mashes together a variety of games for a cool result. Take the classic wall grabbing/jumping characteristic from the original Nintendo Ninja Gaidan, add a dash of speed from Sonic the Hedgehog; finish it off with a pinch of traps that could be taken out of Portal and your presented with a pretty cool atmosphere. Being placed in a stage your object is to grab the gold while trying to not get yourself killed and activate the gate switch that will allow you to take off with all your gold. The graphics in this game were not designed to blow your mind, but rather the play mechanics; Physics and momentum play a huge part in the excitement in the game. In terms of playtime you have almost 300 stages to complete and if that isn't enough, you can also design your own stages and share them with friends.
While the single player is very good, its the multiplayer modes I really enjoyed. Multiplayer is available in three flavors: Co-op, Race and Survival. Co-op is your standard co-op adventure, while Race and Survival pit you in a 2-4 war against other ninjas. For myself, I got the most enjoyment out of Race mode, constantly on the move and doing my best to get ahead of the other players and reach the exit first. It sounds simple but its truly a fun experience. Survival mode has no exits and the object of this mode is to be the last ninja standing. Getting taken out by enemy robots will reduce your lifeline but grabbing gold will restore it causing fast and frantic panic when all the gold is taken and it slowly respawns back.
The music and audio effects in the game are well done, especially when your blasted to pieces by enemies and the music has a nice electronic breakbeat vibe going to it, but the tracks are limited and can lead to them getting old quickly. That being said the audio environment gives you a good sense of the game's atmosphere when the graphics can not.
I have to admit, when I first saw the previews for N+ I was not impressed, the game seemed like it didn't have much going for it and lacked excitement to me. Simply put: I was wrong, this game is a lot of fun and contains enough modes to keep people interested for along time. Once you get into the quick learning curve of the game, you'll be running, jumping and wall climbing to victory. For those of you who are still not convinced, take 10 minutes and try out the demo, you might be impressed just like me.
Overall I give N+ four ninja sidekicks out of 5 ninja sidekicks
Ninja Out!

Gears of War Action Figures
With the huge success of the Halo figurines, Cliffy Bleszinski (lead designer of Gears of War) has always dreamt of seeing a line of Gears of War action figures on the shelves. Well Cliffy, you're in luck.
It is said that Gears figurines are being made as I write.
Epic Games' Mark Rein has confirmed that the GoW figures are in the works. When will they come out for sale? Not sure. But when this collection does come out for sale, I'm definitely getting myself the collection.
And before I leave, since we're on the subject of Gears, you can look forward to its sequel on November 15, 2008. It's a must get.
Castle Crashers is the hotness !

Another sweet shirt, pretty sure this one is limited.
.. or you could say screw the shirts and make a costume!

The Astro A40 Audio System
However, it's said in Game Informer's latest issue (pg. 38) that it also comes with tons of cords which may leave you clueless on how and where to hook them all up.
Are they worth the money? If you're rich and want to spend your money on something that is of good quality and some-what convenient, sure. Go for it. But as for the average person, don't waste your money on this. Sure it's nice and has great sound, but surround sound speakers are nicer. I'd suggest buying that instead.
I suppose if you're living with an extremely loud/annoying family or roommates, then maybe you'll want to pick this up.They cost $249.99

Xbox 360 Handheld
The handheld has been around for ages. First Nintendo, then Sony, and now Microsoft. That's right Microsoft fanboys, if you refused to buy a PSP or a DS due to your hardcore dedication to the Xbox, now you have something to look forward to.
There is no guarantee that the Xbox 360 handheld will be released into markets, but many rumors have spread and pictures of the device have been shown in the media. There is a good chance that this device will be sold but when? I'm not sure. The graphics will be almost as good as they are on your 360 console and it it said that Microsoft is working on this handheld. It's just a matter of how satisfied they are with it.
The layout of the device is beautiful and the controls are almost identical to the 360's controller. I'm very excited about this handheld. My hopes are very high for it to be released. I highly suggest that any gamer looking for a good handheld buy this if it's ever put on shelves.

ICS with AOL
Are you trying to connect to Xbox Live using Internet connection Sharing (ICS) and your internet service provider is AOL?
- On your PC go to control panel then network connections.
- Select "Create a new connection" from the left side bar.
- The Wizard will welcome you and asks you to Click Next so, click next.
- Select "Connect to the Internet" then Next.
- Then select "Set up my connection manually" then Next.
- Select "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name or password" then Next.
- It will ask you for your ISP name so put it AOL.
Then your AOL user account for example something@aol.com (must be with the @aol.com) into the username field and your password into the 2 password fields then click Next.
If you have multiple AOL accounts make sure to use the "Master Account"
You are now on the "Completing the New Connection Wizard" screen, check the box "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop".
- Now you'll need to disconnect from the Internet, and double click the new shortcut created on the desktop to connect to the Internet again using our new connection.
- Now make sure you can browse normally using the new connection shortcut. If you get any error telling you there is a problem with the username or password you entered or a domain problem, the details you have put in for sure are incorrect.
- Check your username and password and make sure to put the correct one as this must be set first before we move to the next step. If you are sure that your username and password are correct and that you are using the Master Account, try changing your password, especially if it is longer than 7 characters, try to make it 5 or 6 also try entering your details in lowercase.
- Now we'll allow ICS option normally to the new connection we just created, go to "Control Panel" then "Network connections" and right click the new connection.
- Select properties then go to the advanced tab and check "allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection"
- If you have more than one network you'll get a dropdown box to select the network you want to share the connection to. If you just have one network you just click Ok.
- Finally connect the Ethernet cable to your Xbox 360 and PC.
Make sure you always connect using the new connection (shortcut on the desktop and forget about the original AOL icon)
And if you are already connected to the internet, disconnect and reconnect using the new icon. Your internet browser will not start automatically like it used to do. Just start it up manually after connecting with the new icon.
NOTE:
- You have to set everything in your Xbox network settings to AUTOMATIC.
- And NEVER Put YOUR AOL Username/Password into the PPPoE section of your Xbox Dashboard. As this will prevent you from accessing Xbox live. (This is for ICS)
End War
With End War coming up this year, I heard a lot about its new approach to gaming. Personally, I'm not a RTS fan and when I heard about End War, I wasn't all that impressed. However, as I listened to Julian Gerighty (producer of Splinter Cell and and developer of End War from Ubi Soft) talking about the game, he went on about its intense strategy game play and high attention to detail with physics and visuals.
Mr. Gerighty also mentions that they wanted to take a different approach with the camera instead of having an overhead view of the war zone like all other RTS games. With End War, you can not only see from an overhead view, but get an up close and personal view with the battle. The one thing that struck my attention the most though, was when Julian mentioned that you can have two ways of playing through the game: play with the controller... or use voice command. The voice command isn't just a temporary method of gaming either for this game. You can play from beginning to end via mic.
I believe that this will defiantly set the bar to a higher level for gaming. Who knows, maybe we'll start to see more RTS and/or MMOs with voice command. As for those like myself who have not gotten into the real time strategy gaming scene, I have a feeling this will be a great game to pick up for first timers. You can look for this multi-platform game on shelves on September 3, 2008.

Red Rings of Death at GDC!
"Microsoft wants consumers to believe that its problems with the Xbox 360 console in terms of hardware failure are over. But wandering through the Game Developers Conference halls and it's clear that the problem persists. On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death. There's no way of knowing if this particular console was manufactured before or after Microsoft identified the problems with the machines."
Well, thats quite embarrassing. Everyone knows it happens but at one of the biggest gaming events of the year? Ouch.

HD-DVD falls to Blu-Ray
Well folks, for people like you and I who picked up the HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360, I have some sad news to share: The format officially died today due to Toshiba pulling the plug on their HD-DVD machines and discs. Am I upset? No, because if I still want HD movies I can still go rent them from my cable provider or even get them for Xbox Live Marketplace. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up a ton of HD-DVD movies for cheap soon!
Official press release:
OKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Tuesday February 19 - Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.
“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,” said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”
Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
This decision will not impact on Toshiba’s commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.
Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

UIGEA Proposed Regulations - Sen. Sununu's Response Letter
I've recently learned of a letter, dated February 11, 2008, from Sen. Sununu on the topic of the proposed Treasury regulations for the UIGEA (the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act). While I have not yet acquired a copy of the letter in question, my understanding is that the letter urges greater clarity in the proposed regulations.
The regulations (available here) essentially place all of the responsibility for the enforcement of the UIGEA on the banks and financial institutions. Why does this matter? It is another piece of evidence that the UIGEA is not the most ideal piece of legislation, and may in fact be short lived. As there are already at least three proposed alternative bills (including the Skill Game Protection Act), it may only be a matter of time before the UIGEA is pushed to the status of mere historical footnote.
However, I'm getting ahead of myself. The letter in question, as I understand it, notes this major difficulty in the regulations, specifically placing an undue burden on the financial institutions and wholly lacking clarity in what gaming is actually "banned." The law, as a global concept, is supposed to be a clear arbiter of an issue, and clarity is a feature that the UIGEA lacks.
The Treasury will release their revised regulations sometime in the not too distant future. Until then, we can only speculate as to what the end result will be, or what other bills may pass in the mean time.

Halo 3's Final Moments Legoized
"The last moments of Halo 3 were really pretty exciting. Fast driving, over-orchestrated theme music, unavoidable deaths—sure it was a bit Halo Kart, but it was an exciting conclusion all the same. But all those polygons pale in comparison to the still LEGO version."
Wow man. Do Legos ever go out of style. I could get a Lego set today and I wouldnt complain. And this is one of the coolest Lego work I have ever seen. (Besides a Lego Stephen Colbet) Now if they would just make a Lego scarab....

New Asian Halo 3 Xbox 360 Bundle
"But that's OK, because that's not the point! This one's aimed at cashing in on Chinese new year's celebrations. The bundle includes a 20GB 360, a copy of Halo 3 and two wireless controllers, which is a nice touch. It'll set you back 669 Singaporean dollars (USD$440), which looks like a lot but is only S$20 more than the Christmas Viva Pinata/Forza bundle, a good deal since most buyers would probably prefer the second controller to the second - ie Viva Pinata - game. As for other Asian territories, it'll cost HK$3,199 in Hong Kong and NT$13,680 in Taiwan. Guey Hay Fat Choy!"
Which holiday would it do better in; Christmas or the Chinese new year? Does anyone else find it funny that they used the render from the first Halo 3 screenshot on the box?

"Pre-order boxes for Rock Band's Stage Kit have begun turning up, giving us our first look at the all-in-one device. It appears...functional, albeit a little strange, since it looks less like something designed to aid in rocking and more like something that fell out of a Ghostbusters/HG Wells collaboration, and is now hell-bent on mankind's ultimate destruction. If you're willing to risk the future of our species - and pay $99 - for smoke and purple lighting while you play a videogame, that decision is yours and yours alone to make"
This is crazy. They might as well throw a couple hundred screaming fans and a stage in for the complete Rock Band experience.

Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player Drops in Price
"In case you're still holding out hope that somehow, someway HD DVD will make a last minute comeback and triumph over blu-ray as the high definition DVD format of choice, then has Microsoft got the deal for you. Effective today, the MSRP of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on is dropping from $179.99 USD to $129.99. The price drop effects the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. As Microsoft's Larry Hryb points out, once you figure in Microsoft's ongoing five free HD DVD movie offer, which is still in effect until the end of this month, they you've got one hell of a good time to get in on the Betamax of the 21st century!"
Its a good price drop but it won't do anything to help HD-DVDs. Luckly, I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray so unless a third party cleans out both of them I will be good to go.

Call the cops, he stole my Cloudsong! - A Followup
After this week's Law of the Game on Joystiq, I noticed quite a few recurring and/or interesting comments. I thought I would take a few minutes to address them, just to clarify the column. If you haven't read the article or the comments, now would probably be a good time.
(Note most of these are broad rephrasings, not actual quotes.)
1. "Can something you don't own be stolen from you anyway? Do you even own MMO goods?"
This was the elephant in the room for the whole article, and the answer isn't so clear cut. In some games, like World of Warcraft, you technically don't own anything. In others, like Second Life, you do still own certain things. In either case, though, even something licensed to you can be stolen. If I have a copy of Windows XP and the license for that, and it's stolen, I didn't truly own the software. The license was still stolen from me. So long as the TOS for the game apply, everything you have in the game is licensed to you. The other issue mentioned was when the game ends, then what? Well, the game terminated according to the TOS, and therefore your license terminates.
2. "Why should your MMO inventory be treated differently from MP3s?"
This was an interesting question. In terms of theft, I don't think there is a difference. If you've stolen my iPod and its MP3s, or if you've stolen my character and his inventory, they're roughly the same. The reason they are treated differently now, on the other hand, is because there is a special interest group forcing the MP3 issue, and not one pushing the MMO issue. The other difficulty is that in an MMO context, the universe is finite (unless there's a glitch) and so I, as a player, can't duplicate the item (generally speaking, and ignoring skills like blacksmithing). With an MP3, duplication is as easy as "copy" and "paste." That duplication of the MP3 may prevent what would otherwise be a sale. SecondLife complicates this a bit, but the same still generally holds.
3. "Digital items aren't infinitely replicable without cost."
While it is true, nothing is completely without cost, to create an additional digital item has a negligible cost. If I wanted to make 100 copies of a word file, what is the cost of those 100 copies? At most, a few kilobytes of storage space, space which was already paid for in other cost (purchase of the computer, for example). If I wanted to make 100 hard copies of the same document, what is the cost of those 100 copies? Probably $0.10 a page at a copy place, or the cost of paper and ink at home. If it were a real sword the company had to reproduce, it would likely be hundreds or thousands of dollars, whereas putting a new digital sword in your inventory is basically free.
4. "Items in MMOs aren't stolen, they're generally scammed out of people."
Scams, broadly speaking, often fall to "larceny by trick" or "false pretenses." Those are defined/explained:
5. "Speaking of theft, nice Ebaums link."Larceny by trick was created to punish the taking of property with the owner's consent when that consent was obtained by Fraud or deceit. Before the courts created the offense of larceny by trick, defendants who had swindled their victims were able to argue that they had not committed larceny because the victims had willfully given them property.
Shortly after the courts created larceny by trick, they created the crime of obtaining property by False Pretenses. Before, a defendant who induced a person to part with the title to property could escape prosecution because the victim transferred not actual possession of the property but only title to the property. This commercial form of taking was made illegal under the law of false pretenses.
I just took the first link off Google.
The MMO theft issue is clearly a murky one that likely will remain at least partially unresolved for quite some time. However, the issue of virtual taxation, if it takes off, may force the issue of virtual theft to be resolved more quickly, as may the issue of valuation of virtual goods.

Law of the Game on Joystiq: Call the cops, he stole my Cloudsong!
On this week's Law of the Game on Joystiq, MMO theft.

Devil May Cry 4 review.
Due to a huge winter storm and my inability to actually get to work today, the weekend rental comes early and its time to review Devil May Cry 4.
DMC4 starts between the end of DMC1 and DMC2 and introduces you to a new main character "Nero". Dante is also playable in the game but not in till a few missions later on in the game. Many reviews have discounted Nero as a whiny brat, but he actually delivers just as much class and wise cracks as Dante can; so while he's no Dante he can easily hold his own as a awesome character.
The storyline in this game is absolutely phenomenal and the cut scenes from the very beginning will knock your socks off, there is rarely a moment in the game when you want to skip the cut scene because there so action packed and entertaining. Nero is on a hunt for revenge against "The Man In Red" who kills one of the highest members of his holy order. On the way we the gamers are treated to betrayal, new allies and a awesome finish that will leave you wanting more.
Graphically, this game is so smooth and sharp that you tend to forget how much of an accomplishment it is that Capcom achieved to get this game running so smoothly. Sure there are games that look better then it, but they don't nearly run as fast and consistent as DMC4 does.
The sound presentation is a mixed bag, the sound effects are absolutely awesome with the Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and deliver a very well rounded mix; but the battle music gets very repetitive after awhile. DMC4 may be one of those games that you want to throw a custom soundtrack on.
Controlling the game is easy enough and attacks are easy to pull off, but if you've played the DMC series before you'll know that there are some advanced attacks that you can pull off that will do incredible damage. There's nothing quite like picking up a enemy and smashing him on walls and other enemies. Those giant boss monsters that you've seen in cut scenes? You can pick them up too and send them flying to their doom too and its epic when it happens.
Puzzles in the game can be mildly challenging but nothing to difficult that would frustrate the player, add some secret missions and extra play modes give the game a great amount of replay value. The bottom line: Devil May Cry 4 delivers on the next-gen platforms and even though the soundtrack can get a bit boring I give it a 5 out of 5.

Devil May Cry 4 Collectors Edition
Devil May Cry 4 was officially released today and fans of the franchise may want to pick up the collector's edition if they are looking for that extra demon hunting fix.
The collection's edition includes two extra discs, one with the complete first four episodes of the Devil May Cry Anime series and another with a behind the scenes feature as well as downloadable music, screen saver and other PC content that will keep your PC in that devil killing mode.
Not an anime fan? Then you may not want to pick this collector's edition up, but for those who are you really can't beat the cool metal case, the game and the anime in one box.

Devil May Cry Statues
In celebration of the release of Devil May Cry 4 for the Xbox 360, long time fans may want to pick something else along with the game to enjoy all the demon hunting fun. This March (Provided it won't be delayed.) Artfx releases some pretty highly detailed statues of characters from the series. Artfx also did the statue for Master Chief most recently.
I'm thinking about picking up the Dante one! You can pick these up from any popular toy site!

360 Elite Turned Into Halo 3 Laptop
"Heck (aka Bengamin J. Heckendorn) dazzles. He's got the uncanny ability to take things, and turn them into other things. Pretty things, at that! Last spring, he crafted an Xbox 360 into a laptop. Now, he's done the same with an Xbox 360 Elite. Nice trick, but we've seen it before. How about turning an Xbox 360 Elite into something else — like a stack of waffles? Official Site [Ben Heck via Engadget]"
Looks pretty cool to me. I like how he made it look battle worn. Now if he made a Bioshock one, would he make it inside a fish tank?
