Mass Effect downloadable new pack

On March 10th 2008 Mass Effect new downloadable pack “Bring Down the Sky” is available on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Only for 400 MS points and you begin to explore a new world aboard the starship Normandy. This uncharted territory is no holiday destination however; it’s the Asgard system which is currently plagued by ferocious Batarians.
Deep inside Asgard there lies a human colony world called Terra Nova.

The content pack “Bring Down the Sky” is so named because a group of extremist Batarians have hijacked an asteroid station and have set it on a collision course with Terra Nova.
Thus the lives of millions of innocent civilians are in grave danger, and Commander Shepard has less than two hours to interject.
“Bring Down the Sky” is the first in a series of planned downloadable content for Mass Effect.

It adds like 90 minutes of exhilarating new sequences that benefit from the award-winning features of this action role-playing game – intelligent dialogue, tactical battles, and spectacular visuals to depict each scenario.

After completing “Bring Down the Sky” you will earn an Achievement of 50 score points.

Just wanted to give all you serious collectors a heads up, the uber rare Teamxbox.com faceplate is up for grabs on eBay, only a few days left. The faceplate doesn't include the original packaging, but that shouldnt effect the value that much.

Forza Motorsport 2 Downloadable Content Pack

March the 19th : A new content pack is now available for Forza Motorsport 2.

For only 400 MS points you can download 13 of the most desirable road cars ever created, including the Audi S5, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, BMW E92 M3 and Porsche GT2.

For drivers who prefer muddy conditions the new Peugeot 207 Super 2000 is nothing short of a rally dream. And, of course, no Forza download pack would be complete without some classic performance rides such as the ’89 Ferrari F40 and ’71 BMW 3.0 CSL.
Every one of the new cars can be tuned, painted and, most importantly, raced. Thanks to Forza 2’s damage and wear physics as well as advanced tire and suspension models that respond to heat and pressure changes, the game continues to offer the most realistic racing simulator on the market.

The latest batch of new cars can be raced on all of the game’s 47+ ribbons across 14 tracks, including licensed circuits such as:
  • Mugello

  • Suzuka

  • Road America

  • Sebring.

Valve Restocks Companion Cubes

"The Weighted Companion Cube is not supposed to make people cry, but it most certainly did back in late December, when Valve's official plushies sold out within 24 hours of going on sale. We did not hate Valve for this. We were patient. We bided our time. Oh the biding we have done! Now said biding has paid off, as a fresh shipment of Weighted Companion Cubes have shown up at Valve's store, both in plushie and fuzzy dice formats. Both are available for $29.95, and both will more than likely be sold out within days, if not sooner. Aperture Science takes no responsibility for customers trampled to death in the ensuing rush."

Oh man, if they werent 30 bucks I would buy one. Chalk another one up for a future Companion Cube plush owner.

Neon Xbox 360 Arcade Stick

"Can’t get enough of the classic arcade games up on Xbox Live? Then you probably know how miserable it can be to play most of the old school arcade games with the 360’s modern controller. I guess that’s why this one-of-a-kind custom 360 arcade controller has me green with envy.

Created by master joystick builder ShaolinDrunkard, it’s just one of several gorgeous custom arcade sticks he’s designed and constructed.

The hand built arcade controller uses serious arcade quality controls from Sanwa and Seimitsu, with dramatic LED backlighting behind each button. There’s even an awesome green glow which emanates from inside of the sparkly joystick knob.

It’s all housed inside of a substantial oak box, and decorated with the familiar Xbox 360 green rings design (thankfully, no red rings here). Now if only he’d mass-produce these things…"

I think it looks pretty cool, but it does seem a bit.....huge. Very well made though, will he take 20 bucks for it. ;)

Halo 3 Heroic Maps Set Free On Tuesday

"Today's Bungie Weekly Update features a handy reminder for the frugal. Next Tuesday, March 25 at 2 AM PDT, the Heroic Map Pack for Halo 3 will become a free download on Xbox Live. Good things come to those who wait (and reject microtransactions). That will coincide with the reveal of the third map from the soon to be released Legendary Map Pack, which, if you're getting greedy, has no current plans for becoming an eventual freebie. Who knows if that may change. God and The Shadow, probably. Maybe Luke Smith."

I cant wait to finally play some of those Foundry maps. I thought 10 bucks was too much for 3 maps but with the next pack having a Sidewinder remake, I might buy it.

Limited GTA 4 Xbox 360s are SICK!

"Microsoft is doing its best to ensure that everyone and their bloggin' grandmother knows that Grand Theft Auto IV is shipping day and date with its PlayStation 3 counterpart. One of the ways they're doing that is through a limited production of GTA IV-branded Xbox 360 Elites, which Complex writes it recently received. No, you can't buy them in stores, but I'm sure one money hungry recipient will put his or her Xbox 360, with the matching metal briefcase, up on eBay soon. Keep your eye peeled, collectors."
Wow. Those are seriously sick. I would kill for one of those. Really, if I know you and you get one of these, you better watch your back.....

Portal's Companion Cube Gets Teleported To Toronto

"You may remember Posterchild's previous video game to real world work, when the artist started throwing up Super Mario Bros.-style question blocks made of cardboard and wrapping paper that dangled from tree limbs and light posts. Posterchild has taken another iconic video game block, the Weighted Companion Cube from Portal and installed it (with matching portal) on Bloor Street in Toronto. There are much bigger and much better pics of this fantastically super awesomeness at Posterchild's own blog, if you're not in the area to eyeball them yourself."

Man, you cant go wrong with the Weighted Companion Cube. I think I have posted more stories about the Companion Cube than anyone else in the world, yet I dont feel satisfied. Give me Companion Cube or give me death!

Best Buy Offers Gift Cards for HD-DVD Players

"Are you one of the unfortunates stuck with a now useless HD-DVD player? Did you purchase it at Best Buy before February 23rd? If you answered yes to both of these questions, you can return that old door stop to Best Buy and get a $50 gift card in return. According to CNN it is estimated that upwards of $10 million in US Gift cards. HD-DVD owners will be found through Best Buy's Reward Zone program, service plans and online orders. The gift cards will automatically be mailed out to qualifying folks at the beginning of may. If you are not a Reward Zone member you can bring in your BB receipt or credit card info. They will also be offering an online trade-in center where customers can unload their unwanted players beginning March 21."

At least Best Buy is being nice to those poor folks (my brother included) but that doesnt mean you should rush out and do that. There are still some pretty good HD DVD exclusive movies.

EE Announces Exclusive Halo Action Figure

Entertainment Earth (entertainmentearth.com) and McFarlane Toys (spawn.com) have joined forces to produce an exclusive action figure from developer Bungie's mega-popular Halo franchise. Based on designs seen in the video game Halo 3 for the Microsoft Xbox 360 platform, this 6-inch scale yellow ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) is fully articulated and features authentic accessories straight from the best-selling game.
"Action figures and collectibles from the Halo video game series have been extremely popular for us over the past few years," says Jason Labowitz, President of Entertainment Earth. "So, when we saw McFarlane Toys' expert take on the license, we knew that we had to offer a figure that won't be available anywhere else."
Based on one of the playable personae from the game's much-beloved multiplayer mode, this figure allows fans to pull one of the characters from inside the game and place it right on their desks. Not only is this collectible a highly detailed replica, but McFarlane Toys engineered it so that several points of articulation are present… without compromising the statuesque appearance. Carrying his trusty battle rifle with sniper scope, the limited edition ODST is expected to start shipping to fans all over the world in the fall of 2008.
This special release will not be available at any big-box stores. It will be sold only through Entertainment Earth's retail catalog and website (entertainmentearth.com). Wholesale inquiries may be made at EE Distribution (eedistribution.com).

I think it looks pretty cool. Halo action figured are always cool, arent they?

  • Go on your Xbox 360 to "System" then "Network Settings", and make sure that all the settings are set to Automatic if not put it all to automatic
Now Connect to Xbox Live and Enjoyyy.....

Burnout Paradise DLC to be Free

"Not so long ago, Criterion promised that some of their DLC for Burnout Paradise would be free. It was good news, but who really knew if we'd get any of the decent stuff without paying for it? On the Criterion message boards, creative director Alex Ward revealed that a new map expansion including multiple islands of city expansion will be free for everyone.

So does this means that all new Burnout Paradise maps will come free so that all users can partake in the multiplayer? No, but it's a good sign that Criterion may focus their paid DLC on individual items like cars rather than collectively shared add-ons like maps. We'll see how this unfolds, but so far, so good"

Sounds great. Paradise is a great game and I considered buying it but got Army of Two instead. Any free DLC is great.

360 Remains Blu-Rayless

"While there was some speculation of the Xbox 360 supporting the Blu-ray HD format, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg has put that idea to rest. He says that Microsoft is not currently in talks with Sony about integrating Blu-ray into the system. Nor are there any SKUs for Xbox 360s with Blu-ray in the works. So there you have it. From Greenberg's mouth to our ears, there's no Blu-ray in the future of the Xbox 360."

When is Microsoft going to realize it needs blu-ray to compete with the PS3? Do they not notice that the PS3 is selling better now?

Xbox 360 3 Red Lights

Xbox 360 Problems?

Xbox 360

Does your Xbox 360 have the 3 red lights of death?

If so, you're not alone. One in every three Xbox consoles has problems.

With games like Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Bioshock and Call of Duty 4, the Xbox 360 is one of the most popular consoles available. If you're a hardcore gamer like me, you can play for hours on end.

Unfortunately, these long playing times cause the Xbox 360 3 Red lights and numerous other problems that have plagued the Xbox over the years.

One of the most common problem is the three flashing red lights, which indicates

a general hardware failure. This is well known among Xbox gamers as the 'red ring of death'. Thousands of agitated gamers have experienced this problem.

Microsoft can fix your Xbox. Unfortunately, you'll be waiting 4-6 weeks for your Xbox to finally be returned to you if you send your console in to Microsoft. That's an eternity if you're a serious gamer like me. And when they return your broken console, you don't get one of the new ones...you get a refurbished old one, which may or may not be the one you sent in.

If you don't want to wait that long, check out this simple repair solution you can do right at home. This Xbox 360 3 Red Lights Fix will have you playing your favorite games in under an hour.

Once you have your Xbox 360 back up and working, there are a few tips and tricks you can follow to prevent future Xbox 360 problems.

First, you'll want to make sure your gaming system is placed in an area where air can flow freely. If you keep your Xbox in a closed cabinet, you may want to take it out and let it get some air.

You'll also want to make sure the Xbox is not located near a heat source like the back side of a television, computer, monitor, or other electrical device.

It can also be very beneficial to get your Xbox up off the ground. The main idea here is to get your PSU off the ground for maximum heat release.

Whatever you do, don't put your Xbox on carpet. This will block the ventilation and will cause the system to overheat very quickly.

You can also get a hair dryer and put it on a COLD setting and use the hair dryer to blow in the vents at the side of the Xbox 360. This may sound dumb but your Xbox may have some dust that is causing it to overheat. Just make sure that you have it on the COLD setting.

By following the tips above, you can usually prevent the Xbox 3 red lights all together.

Sending your Xbox into Microsoft can be time-consuming as well as expensive.

The typical cost for a repair can be as much as $140 plus shipping and handling.

Thankfully you can fix most of these problems yourself. If you've had trouble with the three red lights, overheating consoles, graphic errors, or freeze ups, check out this Xbox 360 Repair guide.

Now, here's the cool part. Once you learn how to fix these common errors, you can start making money by buying broken xbox 360's and reselling them on places like Ebay. You can find tons of broken xbox 360's with the 3 red lights on places like Craigslist and eBay. Almost all of these can be fixed and then resold at a profit on eBay. This has turned into a part time business for many people.

Halo Uprising #3-4

Halo Uprising, the comic series that bridges the gap between Halo 2 and Halo 3 will be finishing up its 4 issue mini series by (Hopefully) the end of April. Issue 3 is currently due out March 26, 2008 and the forth and final issue is due out April 9, 2008. This series was only suppose to run from September to October, so what happened?

1470new_storyimage8229272_full Halo hp3 0.395106001185489051image_big

Halo Uprising Issue #1 launched with incredible results. It pretty much flew off the shelves at comic stores with copies only remaining at stores that are not known for its regular comic sales, like Hot Topic. The artwork was cool and storyline wise really seemed to focus on the destruction of Earth and the humans being held hostage by the Covenant race. More people picked up the comic and soon it was completely sold out and a second print run of the first issue was ordered. This time with a slightly changed front cover and shortly after the second issue launched, but this time with poor results.

The second issue changed from a story of survival to a cheesy love story between two people who wouldn't have met under normal circumstances but because of the Covenant attack they are forced to depend on each other. This love focus really takes away from the overall story and makes it seem as if the destruction isn't important because these two characters need to get into each others pants. Sure, the Master Chief plays a role in  a few pages, but he is extremely secondary compared to everything else. I finished issue two with disappointment, hoping #3 and #4 would end on a far better note, but then the odd delays kept coming.

#3 Was scheduled for November and pushed back December, then January. Pushed again for February and now its "Scheduled" to be out in March. Could the poor reception of issue two have caused a rewrite and refocus for the story for the last two issues? Who knows, it least it hasn't been canceled.

If you haven't picked up the first issue, you can still hunt it down on eBay.

Small Soldiers Hit The Shelves

They're here! The Gears of War action figures will be on shelves this spring! NECA Toys has just finished their first line. It's very rare that I see figurines with this much detail. While skimming through OXM's latest issue (April 2008 issue pg. 11), my eyes were glued to the two page section of the Gears action figures.

Blood stained lancer, double barrel shotgun, and even Carmine's eyes show through his detailed helmet. These gears (and locust both drone and sniper class) are equipped with side arms, a primary weapon, and their basic armor (with tons of shininess and scrapes and cuts which will make you never want to take your eyes off of your collection).
"We sculpt everything traditionally by hand. No digital outputs or computer scans." - NECA's Randy Falk
You can look for these incredible figures in late spring (April says NECA Toys).

Bungie interviews Todd McFarlane

BNET_MC_detailA nice interview about the Halo 3 Toys is now posted on Bungie.net. In the article Bungie asks Todd if they have any Recon Armor action figures in the works:

Q: Any plans to make a “Recon” armor Spartan in the future?

TM: I was told by some of my employees to let you know that “you can has Recon” when you give “us” Recon. I’m guessing then, that they would prefer if I didn’t tell you that we already have it in the works, but I’m going to anyway... We already have Recon in the works (but it may not be easy to get).

Could this be what the Halo Points you can rack by buying the figures will be used for? So far the details have been mum, but it makes a lot of sense and would be a cool reward for people who have been picking up the figures.

Mass Effect DLC Review: Bring Down the Sky

mass-effect-boxart The new Mass Effect content is out bringing us a brand new mission to a already huge game, does this new content deliver or does it "Bring down" the excitement of any future content being released?

The “Bring Down the Sky” downloadable content pack for Mass Effect is available now on Xbox Live for 400 MS points. “Bring Down the Sky” contains approximately 90 minutes of heart-pounding action and a new Achievement worth 50 Gamerscore points.

“Bring Down the Sky” includes a new uncharted world that introduces the notorious and feared alien race of the Batarians. A Batarian extremist group has hijacked a mobile asteroid station in the Asgard system, setting it on a collision course with the nearby colony world of Terra Nova. Only Commander Shepard can save the millions of innocent civilians before the asteroid completes its deadly descent.

As excited as I was about more content being released for Mass Effect, I have to admit I was somewhat skeptical. For 400 points was this just going to be another uncharted world with some small text instructions like so many of the uncharted world missions in the game? Or was Bioware going to go all out and add some new cut scenes, characters and dialog that would do a more visual presentation of adding to the already cool universe of Mass Effect. Good news folks, Bioware choose to expand its game on a more visual note.

To access the new content, you simply go to the Xbox Live Marketplace and download the new content. After its downloaded it will install automatically next time you boot up Mass Effect, there are a few steps needed to be done to access the new content though. From your galaxy map on your ship you have to choose a new location on your map called Asteroid XXX and you'll launch off to the area where the asteroid is located. When you enter the galaxy location you are treated to a new cut scene with a distress signal from a women crying out for help, she reveals that something bad is going down on this asteroid and that the fate of a nearby planet is jeopardy if you don't stop the enemy from slamming the asteroid head on with the planet.

I won't get into plot spoilers, but on your way through this mission you'll meet a new alien race, brand new characters, plot sequences and plenty of action, all with new cut scenes and dialog. This goes far beyond your typical uncharted world mission and you'll even get to make more paragon/renegade decisions that will completely effect the outcome of the extra mission. My only hint is to make sure that you keep your item slots open at the end of the mission, as you'll get to receive something very cool at the end.

My one and only gripe about the content is the way it has to be accessed. The last time I played Mass Effect I just completed my second play though and in order to access the new content I had to play through Eden Prime and the beginning of the Citadel all over again. It would of been neat if Bioware would of thrown in a option on the main menu that allowed you to enter a DLC content only galaxy and to speed things up you could import your current character. Thankfully, if more content is released I have a save that will take me right back to my ship and to new content when its released.

While I wouldn't say that this has 90 minutes of game play (More like an hour.) I will say that its completely worth the pick up if your a fan of the Mass Effect game and for the 400 points you even get an extra achievement.

If it wasn't for the way you had to access the content this would be a perfect 5, but a 4.5 out of 5 will work just as well. Pick it up!

The Weekend Rental: Frontlines: Fuels of War review.

200271b I really wanted to enjoy Frontlines: Fuels of War, especially after playing the multiplayer demo for a few weeks I was extremely pumped for the full version. I would daydream at work thinking about how cool it would be to drop in a large sum of enemies by parachuting out a helicopter and dropping grenades on them before touching down and wiping out who ever remained. After seeing how cool the two maps in the demo were I could only imagine how neat the other maps would be. Sadly, much like my hopes for the rest of the game; the other maps disappointed.

The story for the Frontlines Universe is one about oil. The newly formed Red Star Alliance, led by Russia and China, clash with Western Coalition forces over increasing energy shortages. This sets the stage for a massive conventional apocalypse pitting the biggest military powers against each other as they try to defend their interests and support their collapsing economies. So who's side will you take in this energy war? You won't! You're forced to play the Western Coalition and the Russians and Chinese are made out to be the bad guys in the game. First off, its a war over who gets superior control over the world's remaining energy; so to the player both sides have a pretty equal stance on just fighting for what they need to survive as a country. Instead we're given a one sided story of the situation and it really hurts putting any real drive for the player to take out his enemy other then not getting killed himself. Where's the drama?

By the end of the single player game, you don't really feel like you've achieved anything, but rather you feel like you've just captured another control point and instead of another mission loading; you get a credit sequence. You'll travel to a variety of different stages, but none of them feel truly groundbreaking or fresh from the other stages and the end result is it just feels like a training ground for the multiplayer portion of the game.

Obviously the better portion of this game is the multiplayer and if you haven't tried the demo yet then you'll be happy to hear that the developers put in some new ideas to try to make it more then just a Battlefield clone. Your regular characters classes are expanded by adding sub-classes, meaning that you can be a infantry elite character who can repair things and have more ammo or you can be drone specialist and call upon several smalls items of destruction that can drive or fly around the area. If your not the drone type, you can also use the EMP subclass and use your abilities to disable these drones, radars or even vehicles themselves. Want to call in death from above? Choose the air strike subclass and  bomb your enemies to oblivion. While the drones are a fun class to be, some of the drones can be very hard to control on certain maps. I can't tell you how many times one of my RC cars were destroyed just because I couldn't get it out of a piece of map geometry, not only does it suck to lose your drone, but you look like an idiot with it just being stuck there. Hopefully a patch can address the control issues in the future.

The maps in the demo were certainly two of the best maps in the game as other maps feel messy and poorly put together. Unlike the Streets and Oilfield maps you never truly feel like your capturing anything worth wild and due to the lack of structure and cover at these points, you'll be killed many times before you can capture it. Another thing that the developers wanted to change from your typical Battlefield experience is that the attacking team is only given a certain amount of capture points to try to force you and your team mates to rally together on capture points and not have everyone spread out. While I can see why the developers thought this was a good idea, the downside is that it gives your defending enemy a massive advantage as to where all your attacking forces are going. Where in Battlefield, the mass amount of points added element of suspense and surprise to your enemy and would keep both sides on there toes in terms of counterattacks.

Graphically the game is decent, though it is no where near the quality of Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 but they have come along way since the early single player demo we were given many months ago. The sound effects in the game are well mixed and do a great job of using surround sound. Multiplayer matches are easy to find and you can even find dedicated servers that will allow for smooth gameplay and very little lag.

The problem with the game is that when the multiplayer demo came out, it really gave you a complete taste of the actual game and the full version does nothing more to expand on that. After finishing the short single player campaign and playing all the other multiplayer maps I found myself playing Streets and Oilfield again. Why did I pay 60 bucks for a game when I can experience the best maps, and every feature of the full game for free by playing the demo version?

Frontlines is a decent game but it gets old quick, especially if you've been playing the multiplayer demo of the game for a long time. I can't recommend a buy on this one, but it would definitely be worth a good rental for the weekend. I can honestly say that the demo version was probably my most played demo game ever on the Xbox 360. On the downside my copy of the game is going to Gamestop tomorrow to be used as trade in credit for Condemned 2, if I have an itch to play Frontlines after that; I'll just re-download the demo. Maybe in the end, I'm still the winner.

Final rating 3 out of 5 stars.
