China Bans Use of Virtual Currency for Real Goods
News reports have come out that China has both defined 'virtual currency' and barred the use of that currency for purchase of real world goods. In theory, this is to combat certain underground uses of vitrual money by limiting their use to the purchase of virtual items. In practice, however, it could prevent the spread of virtual worlds like Second Life into China. Based on the Chinese definition of 'virtual currency,' the Linden Dollar used in Second Life is undoubtedly covered, and thus the interplay between the Linden Dollar and real currency would likely be problematic, though the use of Linden Dollars to purchase in-world goods may not be. It will be interesting to see how this continues to play out, especially in view of last year's finding that a virtual seizure had a real world value in China.
Reminder: The Big Debate is This Weekend!
I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that the big debate between Jack Thompson and me is this coming Saturday, July 4, 2009, at 4 pm in Dallas, TX, at the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention. The convention is at the Westin Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, starting this Friday and ending on Sunday.
They've updated the event page to note that it will be on the main stage in Trinity VI. Be sure to get there early, space is limited. I'm looking forward to seeing all the g1s at the event. I'm still waiting to hear from Craig, but I imagine I will be around the convention on Friday and Saturday before the debate.

Amazon.com Review
More often than not, when a game is in development for more than three years, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.
The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known as the Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shaped planet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to the player to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, the game offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemy and allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will use the terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to cover and aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump in and man the turret on the back of it.
The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per second rather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level design is among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging without being frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-in single-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes.
Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Halo raises the bar for console first-person shooters. All console action games will be measured against Halo for years to come. --Raymond M. Padilla
Pros:
- Outstanding game design
- High replay value
- Impressive AI
- Several maps are used multiple times
- Save functions could have been better implemented
- Graphics move at 30 frames per second, not 60
Amazon.com Product Description
This action shooter takes place on a mysterious alien world. It offers a combination of team-based first-person-shooter gameplay (reminiscent of Tribes) and third-person vehicle combat elements. Gameplay kicks off with the player heading down to the planet's surface in a troop carrier, Ã la Aliens. As the player and fellow marines exit, the remaining troopers form a flank in reaction to an oncoming onslaught of human and alien enemies.
It's this smart AI system that makes for a noticeably unique gameplay feel. Another very nice feature is the seamless transition into vehicular elements. As you venture through mission objectives, a variety of enemy flyers and on-ground buggies are yours for the taking. Come across a vehicle and the camera will pull back to a third-person view as you strap in and motor through crossfire. A co-op mode allows a friend to join you in the single-player missions. For chaotic fighting action, up to four players can duel in split-screen deathmatch mode or link systems for LAN play. However you choose to hero your way through Halo: Combat Evolved, the action should break in your new Xbox in explosive style.
Great game even now (2009-06-18)
A solid game to go back and play even today, I recommend playing the halo games in order if you are new to xbox.
A True Classic (2009-05-05)
One of the best games of all time. Man, I wasted so many hours in college playing this game. Good times. Cavie/Clap for life!
The Covenant is near! (2009-04-28)
My friend had Halo 1, 2 and 3. The first time he came out, he brought Halo 3. Man! I was wasting sniper bullets and kept being killed like crazy. I thought the game was `ok'. Then later on he brought out Halo 1 and 2. THEN!!! I christened my aim and ability to live. Number one is stunning! The graphics dominate even Stars Wars' Battlefront! The details on the humans, aliens, vehicles and terrain are great.
The aliens, known as the Covenant, are not the cartoony ones on TV or other games, these guys are great! The aliens shoot insults at you, "Coward!", "He's scared!", "Your skills are lacking!" and others to irritate and bring out the soldier in you.
The tanks and other vehicles are well detailed and are powerful.
Fight in outer space in either your or enemy spaceships or on the ground against the aliens that want to kill all humans.
I did feel, however, that the language (swearing that is) can be a little `ripe', and the blood can be a little unsuitable for younger players (that`s why it`s rated M). But other than that the game is without a doubt great!
THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!! (2009-04-22)
At first I had no desire to play Halo, because it was an FPS, and when I started playing video-games I was terrible at them, I preferred anthing but FPS, but after I started playing the game for the first few seconds, I couldn't live without it! It is the Star Wars of the video-game industry. Why are you guys giving it such bad reviews?! It IS the game of all games!
What's the hype? (2009-04-20)
I'm sorry you people really need to get over yourselves. Halo is a decent shooter, but many of the mechanics are horrendously flawed. Yes, they were fixed in 2 and 3, but other shooters got it right the first time. If you want a shooter that is good at what is does, try Call of Duty 4, Resistance or Resistance 2, or even Call of Duty World at War, not this piece of junk.

Class Action Against SquareEnix Targets More Than Fees
It's been on the major news sites that a class action has been levied against SquareEnix for fees associated with Final Fantasy XI, the company's MMORPG. However, there's more to it if you look at the filing posted by GamePolitics.
News sources have been quick to point out that the monthly fee is clearly stated on the Square website, as most MMORPGs with a monthly subscription plan do. Looking at the pleading, though, the main monthly fee isn't the crux of the complaint. I think the stronger complaint lays with the penalties and interest for late payments, and 'charges while the online game account is suspended,' if that means the monthly fee is continuing to toll. This case may not be about the base monthly fee at all, but rather what happens if you don't pay.
More troubling still are facts 11 i and vi, which essentially challenge the software licensing model as a whole. Fact 11i reads 'Licensing of the online games software disguised as a sale;' while count 11vi reads 'Termination of the right to use the online games for late payment of fees.' To me, this reads that they're challenging traditional software retail and MMO sales as a deceptive trade practice because buying the game doesn't actually purchase a copy of the game nor the right to play. The latter is certainly the weaker point, as I'm fairly certain the box references the required monthly subscription. Normally I wouldn't put stock in an attempt to redefine the entire software industry, especially in California where so much software is developed, but the California courts have been known to issue unusual decisions and have long favored consumer protection.
Count vii, which contests the terms of use, seems like a dead end unless the entire software licensing model is shot down by the court. The Terms of Use are an extension of the license, and if the license is upheld, then the terms of use will be. Other cases have failed to strike down either (other than with regard to things like arbitration provisions), so I doubt this will be successful.
It will certainly be interesting to see the claims in the suit fleshed out further. Based on the information available, this looks like a case of 'I bought the game, didn't pay my monthly fees, and are mad that you won't let me play and are charging me interest on the fees I owe you.'

The DVD Movie Playback Kit is a quick way to expand the functionality of the best gaming machine around! Xbox requires this kit to enable DVD movie playback. Simply plug in the infrared receiver to a controllerport and use the remote control designed for DVD movie playback. No messy cables or confusing game controllers to deal with!
Amazon.com Review
Got an Xbox? Do you enjoy watching DVDs? Then you need one of these. This DVD playback kit unlocks the DVD functionality of Microsoft's powerful Xbox and helps make the console an even more important addition to your home entertainment deck.
Feeling rather light in hand, this remote features large keys that feel rubbery yet firm. The kit sports some of the basic functions you'd expect from a common controller, including chapter skip, play, pause, and number buttons. There's also handy 32x fast-forward and reverse controls.
Pressing the display button calls up a friendly onscreen menu that allows access to more features, including up to 10x magnification, A-B playback loop (for cueing and viewing favorite scenes repeatedly), and subtitle and audio options. It's worth noting that many lower-cost DVD remotes have access to such features through the press of a button. The fact that this one requires you to use a menu to access such common commands may rankle DVD aficionados, as the menu is a bit slower than using buttons. Still, the menu is quite intuitive and couldn't be much easier to use.
For the remote to work, you'll need to plug the included infrared receiver into an open controller port on the Xbox. Most gamers will never need to unplug the receiver again, as you can plug it into the rarely used fourth port. Interestingly, the receiver works best when the remote is operated almost directly in front of it, and can be a little finicky when signals are sent from the far left or right.
The couch potato crowd won't be thrilled to learn that the remote does not include power or eject buttons. Why such standard features were omitted escapes us, but that is far and away the worst thing we can say about an otherwise decent control. --Mark Brooks
Pros:
- Though very lightweight, the controller seems sturdily made and the buttons are large and comfy
- Uses any of the 4 Xbox game controller ports; rarely gets in the way
- Gives the Xbox cool DVD playback features
- Onscreen menu is very easy to use
- No power or eject buttons
- A-B looping, subtitles, and language selects--as well as other features--are only accessible via onscreen menus
- Cannot use the remote from far to the left or right of the sensor

An excellent remote for XBMC (2009-04-24)
This remote works very well, and makes the XBMC experience even nicer. I recommend this to anyone using XBMC.
great remote (2009-04-14)
this remote is so useful! its used to watch dvds through the xbox without unplugging everything and then plugging in the dvd player. a life saver!
Excellent Controller (2009-03-03)
Works as advertised. Perfect to give your Xbox or XBMC the ability to use a remote. I just plugged in the IR Receiver and used my Scientific Atlanta (through Brighthouse) universal remote to control all the basic functions. The remote with this kit works fine if you decide to use it.
RIP OFF!!!! (2009-02-26)
I bought this because I don't have a DVD in the living room and I have 2 regular xboxes, so I wanted to have a DVD there as well. The cost on here is 0.01, yet the shipping is $9.99??? THIS IS A RIP OFF!!! This item doesn't have a weight more than 6 ounces and it's not packaged like it's shown. I think it's REDICULOUS how these people try and jip you off, when u can go to GAMESTOP and buy the Playback Kit for $2.99. I won't do that again on here, TRUST ME!!!!!!
Very convenient (2009-02-21)
It enhances the XBMC experience! I would recommend it to anyone looking to set up a media center using the original XBOX. Definitely good buy!

Spah Sappin' Mah Poll!
I glance away for a moment and, out of the corner of my eye, I spot movement. A puff of smoke, perhaps a blur of color. I look directly at it quickly and nothing is there.
I scroll up the page and check on the poll. Which class is the reader favorite? I see the results, gasp, and immediately know that something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.
Poll Results
Spy- 64 votes (31%)
Medic- 23 votes (11%)
Scout- 22 votes (10%)
Pyro- 21 votes (10%)
Soldier- 19 votes (9 %)
Sniper- 17 votes (8%)
Engineer- 16 votes (7%)
Demoman- 14 votes (6%)
Heavy- 9 votes (4%)
This should be a close one! Why wasn't there a nine-way tie? And why in the world is the Medic, whose job was referred to by computerandvideogames.com as "joyless service," in second place? Isn't it supposed to be boring to play Medic? Apparently not.
Still, this oddity pales in comparison to the strangest thing of all: the Spy managed to take the victory with 41 votes and 20% over the nearest competitor. Why is this odd? Because most of the other classes did not receive half of that number of votes and most didn't reach that much percent.
This poll has been messed around with, and I am sure the Spy has something to do with it. Wait, what's that behind me?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes you into the distant past of the Star Wars universe -- over 4,000 years before Episode I, when battles raged between the Jedi and the Sith!
Amazon.com Review
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Only the Force powers of the Jedi Bastila prevented the Sith from overwhelming the Republic's weakened forces. At the start of the game Malak has usurped control of the Sith by betraying Revan and has attacked the ship carrying Bastila and yourself. In true Star Wars style, the game begins with a bang.
The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure told with humor, compassion, and respect for the source material. Your character has a mystical bond with Bastila, and the two of you share some kind of connection to the Sith villains Darth Malak and Darth Revan. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's sudden fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People.
Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system--anyone who has played Dungeons & Dragons will be familiar with the abilities, stats, feats, and bonuses in this game. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a Mandolorian. Unlike the faceless non-player characters of other games, each member of the supporting cast has an intriguing history and even agenda. Up to two of these other characters can join your character at any time. Depending on who you chose to take with you, new dialogue and even intra-party arguments come into the game (put the Mandalorian veteran with the Republic patriot and you'll see sparks fly). Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item.
Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Building and character models are not impressive--about what you get in GTA 3. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and weather) bring the world to life. Battles are just brilliant, with characters pumping out blaster fire at Jedi who dash, dodge, and even deflect the bolts back toward their assailants. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars.
All in all, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests, and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. Consider this a must-have game.--Mike Fehlauer
Pros:
- Captivating storyline
- Clever dialogue
- Star Wars feel
- True story and dialogue support for either Light Side or Dark Side play
- Brilliant combat graphics
- Fascinating characters (the loyal--and homicidal--droid HK-47 is truly unique)
- Occasional bugs in dialogue, movie playback
- Cannot transfer equipped gear between characters while on your ship
my favorite game (2009-06-01)
i love this game. it is my favorite game that has ever been made. the action is super button mashing, wear out your controller kinda action but its alot of strategy. the game play is addicting and fun. story line is super complicated like a twisted movie. this game is great. deserves the GOTY award. 6/5
Oldie, but still a goodie (2009-05-19)
I'm not a role player. I don't claim to be. I don't really play role players in my spare time when no one is watching. I did like Mass Effect, but that was the first. Being an avid Star Wars fan, I figured I needed to play one of the "best games of all-time". So I decided to buy Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (SWKOTOR). I loved it. I've been playing it for a month now. I've beaten it as a goody-two shoes jedi and now I'm going back to play it again as a dark lord. I didn't take a break from it at all. I'm thinking about even going back again and trying to beat it a 3rd time when I'm done to see how another class upgrades. Amazing game.
Star Wars Kights of the Old Republic [xbox] (2009-05-14)
This game is a must for any Star Wars collection, and it is well adapted to fit a wider aray of player's prefference. If you are looking for a game hack and swing, sword gamelike gameplay, or if you are only keen to the idea of weilding a lightsaber, I recomend that you investigate, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. KOTHR is for the intense role player, with a digital 10D roll fighting base, it is ultamatly D&D brought to the xbox consol with a Star Wars theme.
Great role-playing game (2009-04-29)
This is a great game. I have spent 45 hours in-game so far and have enjoyed almost all of it. At times the conversations can be a bit long-winded but hardly worth complaining about. Overall, if you are thinking about buying this game, I recommend whole-heartedly doing it.
Is this REALLY Star Wars? (2009-03-17)
The first time I played this game, it seemed confusing, and then when I went into combat, it didn't seem very good. After 10 minutes, I thought, "WOW! THIS IS STUPID!" It really was! Then I found out that this game was a RPG (I'm not fond of RPG) Star Wars was never meant to be a RPG, it was meant to be an Action, Adventure, and Shooter kind of game. What do you think "War" means. War=Action, Adventure, Shooter. War doesn't= RP and Strategy games. This is the first Star Wars game that ever let me down! Please don't get it! Get Battlefront and Battlefront II, they're alot better!

Truly one of the original XBOX greats (2009-06-16)
Star Wars Battlefront 2 for the XBOX was a multiplatform game that was also on PS2 and if I am right also the PC. This game basically is just a blast to play. I have had it since not to long after it came out and I have to say after these past few years I still like to get it out and play like crazy.
This game offers a lot for shooter fans and Star Wars fans alike. Graphically I thought the graphics were phenomenal for its time as the game holds up with so many characters on screen at one time and vehicles to boot. Everything about Battlefront 2 reeks of Star Wars from the weapons and right down to the characters.
This time around you can play as leaders also like Darth Maul,Luke Skywalker, Vader, Han Solo and Boba Fett to just name a few. The modes are pretty good in themself and my favorite is Galactic Conquest and Instant Action. There is also a mode called Rise of the Empire. Online was or is still here as I do not have XBOX LIVE and I never did so I cannot speak if it is good or not.
The gameplay is very functional and leaves little to complain about. The replay value to this game is purely on an insane level. It also keeps track of your kills totals and shows a multitude of stats you can go in and look at. Theres also in instant action capture the flag and some other modes.
Pros - One of the greatest games of the last generation, good modes, great gameplay and sound
Cons - I cannot stop playing when I put it in my XBOX
Star Wars Rules !! (2009-06-01)
This is a very entertaining game and gives you the chance to fight in different scenarios of the star wars saga. You can choose sides as well ... The only con I found with the game are the space battles .... kind of boring .... The grafics of the game are very well achieved as are the scenes and characters .... you can even play a jedi or sith ....
Cool game ......
Awesome...love it! (2009-04-16)
This is an awesome game! I've almost beaten it already. Graphics are good, no scratches on the disc, everything works great.
Star Wars Battlefront vs. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2009-01-10)
Third Person shooters have never really been my thing. But Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront 2 changed my mind! I can't decide whhich one I like better. I mean they both have extremely good graphics, and they both have the awesome gameplay! Everything just seems awesome about them. However, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a liitle better than Star Wars Battlefront, but than again Star Wars Battlefront is better than Battlefront 2. I'D say that you should get both Battlefronts, because BOTH are totally awesome! If you enjoy third person shooters these are the games for you!
Excellent (2009-01-08)
This was the second time we purchased this game. We lost the first one. It is definately worth the re-buy.

Excellent buy (2009-06-12)
Connected easily and worked in original XBOX. Definate improvement in quality from plain RCA cables
excellent (2009-05-24)
Does exactly what it is supposed to do. However because it is made in china, you should not gnaw it or you will get lead poisoning.
for 10$ plus 5$ shipping its a must!
also, you can buy cord extenders if you want to run the audio to a receiver.
Satisfying (2009-05-17)
Let's face it-this system ain't exactly HD. I'm beginning to think my Narnia game was mislabeled. But it is good. The colors are definitely improved over composite, and widescreen is always nice to have.
My only nitpick, apart from resolution, is the design. The cable itself is pretty plain-looking and not as attractive as most component video cables manufactured these days.
All in all, I recommend.
Decent component cables, but not perfect (2009-04-24)
These cables do what they advertise. The only small issue I've seen is that they are susceptible to interference from other electronic devices or power cables. Its a quick and easy fix, just don't run these cables directly across power cables or near PC power supplies and they work perfectly.
Very Good, not the best (2009-02-18)
You can get a way better image through HDMI ports. However this picture does come up very good, it is just not the best.
